A Reading the Paranormal Review

I must say that this was a fun little book. Following a group of kids that have to fight the perceptions of society as they struggle to do the right thing was engrossing. The hints of a possible romance brewing between Gem and one of the her partners in crime made me grin. In fact, I am stupid excited to see where that leads in the future.

But this book isn't just about the romance (that's just a tease and it's more like the icing on the cake). This book is about Gem and her drive to do the right thing. She's happy in the halfway house - at least, she's happier than she was in juvie - and she's determined to stay out of trouble so that she can enjoy the freedom and the second chance she's been given. When circumstances step in and put her firmly in the spotlight, she doesn't back down from the fight in front of her. She's spunky and smart and she's not afraid to use her resources.

Probably the only thing I did question as how self aware these kids were. They form strong bonds when things start to go bad and they have to rely on one another and they're very quick to see this. This wasn't a deal breaker by any means (and I liked that they saw themselves as a family), but it was difficult for me to see these kids - some of whom had come from some really horrible situations - as being able to vocalize this closeness so easily.

Overall, it's a solid start to a new series. I really, really, REALLY liked that we got a touch of potential romance that didn't overpower the overall story. Oh, and the bad guy? I didn't guess who it was until the very end. Like usual.

She won't give up...

Gemma Stone grew up in juvie. She knows where she is now (a halfway house of sorts) is the best place she's been so far. She also knows that she'll soon be old enough to go out on her own and she's looking forward to that. Right now, she's been having fun taking pictures and trying new techniques for better photos. When she finds green slime on the creek below the bridge, she has no idea how much trouble that is going to cause her and her friends...

Ms. Mayer graciously shared her ebook with me for review (thank you). I enjoy her writing and the stories she creates, so I was glad to read it. You can buy a copy on Amazon either as an ebook or a paperback now.

The green slime is from an illegal activity and Gemma's picture taking manages to get the bad guy's attention. When Gemma's female friend is kidnapped from the home, she and the other juvies from the home do their best to find her. When they do, she's been drugged and must go to the hospital.

These kids have a natural distrust of law enforcement; they've been on the wrong side of it too often. They don't think anyone is going to protect them from whomever kidnapped their friend. So they will have to do it themselves...

These are strong young adults who can think quickly when in danger and who aren't afraid to fight back. Gemma is especially outspoken and I like her. She's going to get to the bottom of the case and resolve it even if she has to get the whole town involved.

There's good action, challenges galore, and it's a good story. I have the feeling Gemma and her friends will be back. I can't wait to read their next adventure.

Dale pens "Gem Stone" a YA novel in a plot that flow smoothly with strong characters that are easily relateable. Filled with mystery, suspense and thrills this is one book you will have a hard time putting down. Highly recommended for all YA and non-YA fans.

This clearly written and well documented book is a broad overview of the interaction between European (including the USA and some Latin American nations) imperialism and technological innovation. Headrick's basic point is that significant innovations in technology, frequently but not always weapons technology, played a crucial facilitating role in various phases of European dominance of the globe. By the same token, limitations of technologies also defined the limits of European imperialism. Headrick covers the imperialism of the expansion of Early Modern Europe, the second great phase of Imperialism in the 19th century, and the 20th-21th century use of air power in some colonial and semi-colonial adventures. He is a thoughtful and knowledgeable analyst.

While well written and generally informative, the major drawback of this book is that much of information will be be known to even moderately knowledgeable readers. The advantages of European sailing vessels and cannon in the European entry into the Indian Ocean and Indonesian archipelago, the tactical advantages possessed by the Spanish conquistadors in the Western Hemisphere, the epidemiologic advantages of Europeans in the Americas and their disadvantages in Africa, and the role of the scientific/industrial revolution in 19th century imperialism are generally known well. The final part of the book, dealing with the ambiguous effects of air power in colonial adventures, is probably the most novel and interesting part of this book.

Once in a while, it is enjoyable to relive grand historic moments and refresh your general history knowledge. In particular, from a perspective, which may even claim to foretell the natural course of history.

Professor Daniel Headrick examines the period of imperial conquests from the 15th century to present. His book describes the impact of European technological developments on the policies of European monarchs, states and, of course, the deeds and behaviour of people, who carried them out. In a catching narrative the author argues, that throughout the course of history, technological advances and know-how allowed to Europeans to get a power over nature, which was required to gain power over peoples. But not always. Striking victories, as that of Cortés in Central America, turned into draws or even defeats, for example, in case of Portuguese blue-water navies against brown-water navies in Asia in the course of 16th century, or the attempts to penetrate Africa for almost four hundred years.

Headrick underlines, that the key to success was the ability of Europeans to capitalize on temporary advances in technology, but the role of human factors of conquerors, as it may seem at first glance, was not decisive. The technological gap, however, was not always large enough to continue imperial conquests. The power of the technology was ephermal. Most notably, when the adversaries had begun to assimilate European tactics and to use their weapons; the use of horses by Indians, probably, being one of the best examples. The era of industrial revolutions, again provided new incentives for further expansions. However, technology alone, Headrick argues, could not secure lasting power over peoples. He quotes Mao Zedung, who has said that: "Weapons are an important factor in war, but not the decisive factor; it is people, not things, that are decisive"(p.364).

In some chapters, and in choosing the examples to prove his point, the author has been somewhat selective. The whole chapter is devoted to the role of steamboats in expanding European control over vast territories, at the same time nothing being said about railways. Last two chapters are devoted to air control and bombing raids, which, according to Headrick, "more often reinforced the targeted populations will to fight" (p.363). At the same time, the author does not pay any regard to the destructive power of the atomic bomb, which in a swift, though most cruel manner cowed into submission remaining belligerents at the end of the second world war.

The author's conclusion at the end is really thought provoking. He says, that ever improving technology ensures that political and military defeats will come later, and at greater cost" (p.364), quoting Murray and Scales. One could partly agree. However, being aware, that the states, which own modern technologies, can also today win wars over peoples, which do not possess them, as effectively as did Cortés in Tenochtitlán. The difference is, that peoples are more interlinked than ever, which renders any act of barbarism in comparative and historical perspective of previous centuries, hardly imaginable.

All in all, a very fascinating book, which enlarged my horizon about imperial conquests from the most interesting perspective.

Having made the assertion that there is no acceptable text for teaching a course to introduce biotechnology to both scientists and engineers, the author committed himself to resolving the issue by writing his own.

The book is of interest to a wide audience because it includes the necessary background for understanding how a technology works.
Engineering principles are addressed, but in such a way that an instructor can skip the sections without hurting course content
The author has been involved with many biotechnologies through his own direct research experiences. The text is more than a compendium of information - it is an integrated work written by an author who has experienced first-hand the nuances associated with many of the major biotechnologies of general interest today.

About the Author
W. T. Godbey is the Paul H. and Donna D. Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical and Bimolecular Engineering at Tulane University. He received his B.S. in Mathematics from Southern Methodist University in 1988. After a successful period that involved starting his own software design and development company in Dallas, Texas, he joined the fields of science and engineering and earned his PhD as a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow from the Institute for Biosciences and Bioengineering at Rice University in 2000. From 2000-2003 he was a postdoctoral fellow at Childrens Hospital, Boston and Harvard Medical School. He joined the Tulane University faculty in 2003.

Infuriating but essential

Actually the same could be said of the man himself. The evaluation thesaurus is difficult to define and place. It is not so much a thesaurus or dictionary as a series of mini (and not so mini) essays from one of evaluation's leading philosophers.
Michael Scriven has strong views about the place, role and requirements of evaluation, and he uses this book, amongst other things, to lecture on these subjects. The book starts with an extended introduction to (Scriven's view of) the place of evaluation within the academic world, much of which is focused on an over-extended geographical metaphor of academic disciplines. The point of this is an attempt to stake elevaluation's claim to independence as a "trans-discipline" servicing other disciplines in a similar fashion to statistics. (Despite this declaration of independence, Scriven himself is employed within a School of Education)
More useful are the entries themselves, which alert readers to issues such as the "Harvard fallacy" (the assumption that a programme must be good because of its outcomes, without considering any advantages that it might derive, for example from having exceptional student intakes) and the fact that evaluators cannot avoid making value judgements.
You do not have to agree with Scriven, but you need to address the issues he raises if you are serious about evaluation.

A must-have for EVERY serious evaluator! Informative and entertaining

This may be a 1991 publication but it's still a crucially important addition to any serious evaluator's bookshelf.

An added bonus is that fantastic Scrivenesque humor that will give you a chuckle when you stumble across some of the all-time classic entries. One of my favorites:

TERROR An effect frequently induced by goal-free evaluation (sometimes by the *thought* of it) in most of the cast of evaluation actors -- evaluators, program managers, evaluees. The "terror test" is the use of this awful threat to weed out the incompetent. Since everyone uses goal-free evaluation whenever they buy anything for themselves, it is not a good sign of their concern for consumers that they think it inappropriate for program evaluation.

Got to love it! Get this book!!!

excellent book

Coleman has written a scary book on world conspiracy. He claims to be an intellegence agent who has gone public with what he knows. The book is scarier than fiction. It's hard to believe that what he writes is made up, since it agrees with the facts so well. He writes that a secret group,the committe of 300, controls virtually all of industry, science, and entertainment. They keep certain scientific discoveries secret, to keep people dependent on them. They also have disinformation publishers and agents who misinform the public on what is really going on. I was very skeptical when I picked up the book. But it presents a convincing case for a conspiracy. After reading it, I am not so sure there isn't a conspiracy. Well worth the time it takes to read it.

Dr. Coleman Names Names

This is a lifetime's work. The research and sources for the tome have taken a lot diligent library work. We, the commoner's hear a lot about the "they" who control the planet, but this book outlines, and then details the actual workings of the super elite. One is left with a sense to do your own research and verify the truth of the "300." That this is a continuing conspiracy is confirmed by going back many generations. 'Will we ever have a benevolent dictator' is the question. Democracy, socialism, and most political systems have been proven failures. The American model of a Republic is under fire, for it directly confronts the elite. Will enough of the sheeple read this fine work; I doubt it. Let's hope that it is true, that only about 7% of the population can effect a change.

Worse than Hitler

This is the first time that I have read anything like this, and finished the book in just a week. Dr. John Coleman has spent more than four decades in doing research for the book. What he has presented is too scary and does not even come close to what Hitler or Stalin wanted to do. If what Dr. Coleman has written in this book is hundred percent true, then the future is very scary, not only for U.S.A. but for the whole world. But if this book is just like any other book of "fiction" created as truth, then it is a masterpiece, because it scares you to death. All those who believe in the Creator or God and also believe that He controls the world and everything happens with his knowledge and plan, then we have to accept what may come. According to Dr. Coleman the people and organizations that are working as a committee of 300 cannot be stopped from their nefarious plan, and nobody can also fight God or change His plan or the future, then this book projects the future as a very scary movie.

I recommend this book to all who want to understand the past and future events, if they happen as suggested, and plan accordingly, if possible.
