Christopher and His Kind: A Memoir, 1929-1939 (FSG Classics), by Christopher Isherwood

An indispensable memoir by one of the most prominent writers of his generation
Originally published in 1976, "Christopher and His Kind" covers the most memorable ten years in the writer's life from 1928, when Christopher Isherwood left England to spend a week in Berlin and decided to stay there indefinitely, to 1939, when he arrived in America. His friends and colleagues during this time included W. H. Auden, Stephen Spender, and E. M. Forster, as well as colorful figures he met in Germany and later fictionalized in his two Berlin novels and who appeared again, fictionalized to an even greater degree, in" I Am a Camera" and "Cabaret."
What most impressed the first readers of this memoir, however, was the candor with which he describes his life in gay Berlin of the 1930s and his struggles to save his companion, a German man named Heinz, from the Nazis. An engrossing and dramatic story and a fascinating glimpse into a little-known world, "Christopher and His Kind" remains one of Isherwood's greatest achievements."

Review

“Indispensable for admirers of this truly masterly writer.” ―Peter Stansky, The New York Times Book Review

“The best prose writer in English... The later Isherwood is even better than the early cameraman.” ―Gore Vidal, The New York Review of Books

“Isherwood freely discusses a dimension of his experience previously repressed in his fiction, his homosexuality. And in telling the truth about himself, he ultimately transcends the limits of autobiography to write what is, in effect, another novel.” ―Paul Piazza, The Washington Post

About the Author
Christopher Isherwood (1902-1986) was born in Manchester, England, and lived in Berlin from 1929 to 1933 and immigrated to the United States in 1939. A major figure in twentieth-century fiction and the gay rights movement, he wrote more than twenty books.

Fantastic Read
By James Mesco, Jr
I'm not much of a literary critic, but I must say that Mr. Isherwood's little "autobiography" was wonderful. I couldn't put it down. After reading Goodbye to Berlin, I needed to have more of his works, and finding this gem on kindle was fantastic. I highly recommend this to anyone with an interest in Pre-WWII Germany, LGBT History, or just a good read.

Great History
By Amazon Customer
I enjoyed the BBC movie. It promted me to settle down with the book. Overal enjoyable, maybe just a little bit too pissed off at his younger self. Still, a great view of a huge period for the literary stars of the day.

Better than the movie!
By Daniel Torres Rodrguez
This is one of those books that is better than the movie! A great insight into gay life in the 30's in Europe and America. A must read for queer and non-queer readers! It is all about boys.

White Teacher, by Vivian Gussin Paley

Vivian Paley presents a moving personal account of her experiences teaching kindergarten in an integrated school within a predominantly white, middle-class neighborhood. In a new preface, she reflects on the way that even simple terminology can convey unintended meanings and show a speaker's blind spots. She also vividly describes what her readers have taught her over the years about herself as a "white teacher."

Review
A wonderful, useful book--short, warm, and to the point. Using entertaining, well-chosen incidents from her own teaching experience, Vivian Paley examines a question that concerns teachers on all levels: How do I use my own behavior as a teacher to help my students learn to deal constructively with racial and social differences? It would be hard for anyone to read this book without growing a little and smiling a lot. (Kate Long Phi Delta Kappan)

This timely new edition of Vivian Gussin Paley's White Teacher is like a breath of fresh air. Originally published in 1979, it's a book that has important things to say about how teachers perceive and deal with race. In its rather anecdotal, unanalytical way, it sheds light on how all teachers, including those early-years education, negotiate their way through the complexities of living in a pluralistic society. (Reva Klein Times Higher Education Supplement)

Inspirational and motivating...It is a book commendable to teachers, parents, and anyone else who wishes to understand him/herself better and is willing to continue to grow. (Educational Studies)

In this humane and beautifully written account, Paley describes her progress in learning to deal more openly with her pupils'--and her own--perceptions of race. The reader, following Paley's progress with a succession of bright, charming, and sometimes exasperating children, sees how she became a better and more mature teacher. (San Francisco Examiner)

White Teacher is really a nonfictional bildungsroman, a chronicle of both Paley's educational progress and that of the kindergartners under her charge...The stories, beyond even the lessons she draws from them, are very fine...White Teacher documents an admirable dedication...[It is an] eloquent little book. (Julia M. Klein New Republic)

White Teacher, black children: Paley approaches this largely unexplored minefield with candor and incisiveness...The wit and sureness of her observations are compelling...Repeatedly, Paley uses anecdotes to convey judgmental errors, tentative adjustments, barriers overcome, as well as a feel of the classroom--a quiet accumulation of insights which both beginning and veteran teachers will value. (Kirkus Reviews)

Paley's mistakes and blind spots are as vivid as the life-sized children in this portrayal of a journey toward valuing and talking about differences, and helping children to do the same. While this account does not boast of arrival...it should be of interest to anyone committed to nurturing children or to understanding human development in a pluralistic society. (Harvard Educational Review)

Multicultural Education
By Jay
In White Teacher, Vivian Gussin Paley describes her experiences as a young teacher. She tells of her reactions when faced with a classroom full of children who are different from her. By recounting her experiences as a child and reflecting upon them, she is able to better understand why certain children behave in certain ways. These reflections, given in a narrative form, inform the reader of the thought processes of Paley. Through these examples, one is able to better understand what the author was experiencing.
Paley's intention is to prepare future readers for the experiences she has had by giving the reader her reactions to them. She tells the reader what worked to make a bad situation better, as well as what did not. Most of the cultural differences Paley describes occur between her, a Jew of European descent and the African-American children in her classes. However, many of the lessons and principles used apply to all children. Her examples include children with different learning styles; comments taken out of context; children who are excluded from a group and those forming the groups based on a singular characteristic. The majority of the classroom settings are in half-day kindergartens.
This is a wonderful book for anyone who has ever had, or will face a multicultural situation - that would include pretty much all of us. There is an added value in this book for potential teachers. Paley shows how to effectively validate children's perceptions of the world and make them feel value and self-worth.

This is an excellent book for new teachers to read.
By A Customer
I thoroughly enjoyed the book White Teacher. I would recommended this book to every upcoming teacher. The reason I enjoyed the book so much, because she took you into the classroom with her. Ms. Paley lets her readers know that the role of a teacher goes beyond the classroom walls. She also stress the importance of treating each child equally and not to assume that a child has a learning problem because they don't catch on as fast as others. Ms. Paley also stress that the teacher must have enormous amount of love to be with children every.

Finally a resource specififcally for women and keto!
By Angela Acocella
Reading this book makes me feel like there is finally someone out there who totally gets me, gets my struggles as a woman, speaks to me like a friend would, and provides so much information in a logical way that explains what is going on with me and how I can achieve my goals. I’m 25 and have struggled with amenorrhea for three years and have had a damaged relationship with food in the past. Leanne’s approach to truly putting your body first makes me feel like it's OK to not beat myself up if I don’t stick to some strict regimen because otherwise I’ve failed. Every day I'm learning to do what’s right for me based on what my body needs by figuring out what is or isn’t working and following guidelines for how to live my life in a fulfilling way. I'm learning to be OK if what I want or need on a given day changes, I'm gaining the confidence to listen to my body, and practicing strategies to fix the specific imbalances I've been struggling with for so long while feeling like I was alone. I’m still on my journey to recovery and healing my body and am SO happy I’ve found Leanne as a resource!

Prentice Hall Chemistry
By preston hayes
I got this text to help with tutoring a student using it. Just having a copy of his text helps with the sequencing of concepts that have been frustrating him. Since he seldom read his text there were few problems with some concepts that are not well presented. Once he began to use the text as a resource for learning he found that his interpretation of textual material needed elaboration. Thetext contains a few minor errors but in general is well written. It needs augmentation in order to serve as a true honors text, particularly with the problem set at the end of each chapter. I would not choose it as an honors text.

After years of catering to the whims of the rich and famous at one of the Caribbean's most luxurious resorts, there isn't much that can rattle Carla DeLuca.
Until Sam O’Connell shows up.
Tall, dark, and sexy, Holley Cay's new security chief is no stranger. He's the irresistible bad boy who seduced her over a long, hot summer only to leave her heartbroken, humiliated, and determined to never again fall for a player like him. But though her heart still stings with the memory of his rejection, her body can't forget the all-consuming pleasure of his touch.

Sam never forgave himself for his too cruel rejection of Carla over a decade before. Young, reckless, and convinced it was only a matter of time Carla regretted hooking up with a trouble maker like him, Sam pushed Carla away before she could realize her mistake. But when Sam lands a job working for Carla in paradise, he seizes the chance to finally make things right.

When a hurricane strands them alone on the island, Carla is unable to resist the passion simmering between them. She doesn't fool herself that what they have will last past the storm. But little does she know, Sam will do whatever it takes to make her his – forever this time.

It was ok
By Pink cheeky
I liked the premise of the book but reading it I felt it didn't live up to its potential. Firstly Sam & Carla never actually did the deed over 10years ago but they hold each other as the ideal sexual partner? What the? How can all your previous partners pale in comparison to someone you've not actually been with?
Also I found Carla a bit petty & unwilling to let go of a grudge. If Sam was a grown man & behaved the way he did then ok but he was a teenager give him a break!
I just couldn't warm up to Carla so I gave this 3 stars

Painful protagonist and Hard to empathize
By Amazon Customer
I just finished reading it in one setting. However, I found it hard to finish, and had to force myself to do it so I could write a complete review.

I found Carla, the female protagonist, hard to tolerate; she was too self-righteous and played "the victim" card ad nauseam, until the very end. I found her to be childish, emotionally selfish and extremely annoying that even all the sex scenes did not do much to lift up the story. And there were a lot of those. Carla and Sam were at different levels mentally of what their feelings were for each other that those sex scenes felt forced and lacking true Intimacy.

In addition, Carla has been holding a grudge for 11 years because Sam left her and broke her heart. Therefore, what does she do with the man who humiliated her, and made her feel worthless? Does she honestly confront him about it? NO. Is she honest with herself or demands an apology? NO. As soon as the opportunity presents itself she is having sex with the same man who trampled on her feelings and heart, "Just to scratch an itch" as she puts it; "It is only sex," according to her (foolish thoughts). It only exemplified Carla's immaturity.

I personally did not feel any empathy for her or her predicament.

Sam, the male lead felt more human and patient; almost too patient. I actually felt bad for him at many times. He was the only adult one in this relationship.

Overall, it was a painful read and the storyline just dragged on, in my opinion.

Okay..So It Is A Bit Trashy, But...
By Lisa E. Garcia
That is what one should expect if they read the book summary. My personal opinion was that this book delivered and I enjoyed every single page. Jami Alden added the perfect notes of chemistry and heat to keep me wanting more and I plan to read more from her. It took me a minute to get used to the graphic language used during the sex scenes, simply because I don't usually read erotic lit. I think I might read a little more now...

Including the most unlikely of women.

The mousy redhead who used to run around the Moorehouse B and B—the one he never noticed—is now all fiery hair and lush curves. But sweet Joy Moorehouse is too innocent for a cynic like him. So Gray won't let himself lay a hand on her…until the night he can no longer resist the woman she has become. That's when he discovers a secret that leaves him gasping for breath—and wanting more.

The boat's engine throbbed as Grayson Bennett kept the Hacker at a low speed and close to the lakeshore. The antique, thirty-foot craft was his pride and joy, a relic of the Great Gatsby era of lake life. Made of mahogany and varnished to a shine so bright it could hurt your eyes, the Bellitas was indeed a thing of beauty. And she was wickedly fast. The long, thin design provided three discreet seating areas, marked by contoured banquettes in dark green leather. The massive engine, capable of shooting the boat through the water at speeds of sixty miles an hour, took up a good six feet of space in the middle.

He would miss her when he put her up on blocks for the winter, and the time for her yearly hibernation was coming fast. He could feel it in the air.

Even though it was the middle of the day, September was cool in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. To take the edge off the chill, he was wearing a windbreaker and his only passenger, aside from a big, very happy golden retriever, had on a thick sweater.

Naturally, the dog had plenty of insulation.

Gray looked across the seat at the woman who stared at the cliffs they were passing. Cassandra Cutler's thick red hair was secured at her neck and her green eyes were hidden behind sunglasses. The frames covered up the dark circles of her exhaustion, too.

No doubt she saw little of the rocks and pine trees, he thought. Life had to be an inconsequential blur for someone who'd become a widow only six weeks ago.

"How're we doing?" he asked his old, dear friend. She smiled slightly, a tense expression he knew she worked at. "I'm glad you pestered me to get out of the city."

"Good."

"I can't imagine I'm enjoyable company, though," Cassandra said.

"You're not here to perform."

Gray focused on the lake ahead as the silence was filled with the sound of the boat's deep-throated engine and the lapping of water against the wooden gunnels. Sunshine glinted off the mahogany, flashed over the tops of the gentle waves, brought out the vivid blue of the sky and the dense green of the mountains. The air was so clear and clean that when he breathed deep, the inside of his nose hummed.

It was a perfect fall day. And he was about to shoot the hell out of his quiet enjoyment.

When they'd left his estate's boathouse, he could have taken them in any direction. To the south, where they could have danced around a thicket of small islands. Across to the west to see some of the other big stretches of property.

But no, he'd chosen the north where sooner or later the old Moorehouse mansion would appear. White Caps was a big white birthday cake of a house, perched on a three-acre bluff. Once the family's lavish private home, it had been turned into a bed-and-breakfast by them when their money had run out.

But he wasn't going to look at the property.

When the bluff appeared in the distance, his eyes narrowed. The long rolling lawn, which drifted from White Caps' porches to the shore, was a dazzling green. Oaks and maples framed the house, already turning colors from the frosts that came at night.

He couldn't see anyone and he looked harder, even as he started to turn the boat around.

Cassandra didn't need to get anywhere near the Moorehouse place. Her husband's sailing partner, who'd survived the yachting accident, was recovering there with his family. Gray wasn't sure she knew that or whether she'd want to see Alex, but he wasn't inclined to take a chance at giving her another shock. She'd had enough bad surprises lately.

Cassandra's voice did not break his concentration. "My husband liked you, Gray."

"I liked Reese," he said, looking over his shoulder at the house, eyes searching.

"But he thought you were a dangerous man."

"did he?"

"He said you knew where most of the bodies were buried in Washington, D.C. Because you'd put a lot of them in the ground."

He made a noise in the back of his throat and continued to stare as White Caps grew smaller.

"I've heard it from other people."

"Really."

"They say even the President is wary of you." He glanced back at the house again. "Loose talk. Just loose talk."

"Considering the way you're looking at that mansion back there, I'm not so sure." Cassandra tilted her head to the side, regarding him with steady curiosity. "Who lives there? Or more to the point, what do you want that's in that house?"

When Gray remained silent, Cassandra's dry chuckle floated over on the breeze. "Well, whatever it is, I feel sorry for the poor thing. Because you look like you're on the hunt."

"Hold still or I'm going to stick you," Joy Moorehouse said to her sister.

"I am holding still."

"Then why is this hem a moving target?" She shifted back onto her heels and looked up at her work.

The wedding gown hung from her sister Frankie's shoulders in a graceful fall of white satin. Joy had been careful with the design. Too many frills and excess fabric wouldn't pass muster. Frankie thought blue jeans were formal as long as you wore them with your hair up.

"Do I look like I'm in someone else's dress?" Frankie asked.

"You look beautiful."

Frankie laughed without bitterness. "That's your department, not mine. I'm the plain, practical sister, remember?"

"Ah, but you're the one getting married."

"And ain't it a miracle?"

Joy smiled. "I'm so happy for you."

Everyone was. The whole town of Saranac Lake was thrilled and they were all coming to festivities that were taking place in about six weeks.

Frankie lifted the skirting up gingerly, as if she might hurt it. "I have to admit, this thing feels good."

"It'll fit even better when I finish the alterations. You can take it off now."

"We're done?"

Joy nodded and got up from the floor. "I've basted all around the bottom. I'll stitch it up this evening and we'll do another fitting tomorrow."

"But I thought you were going to help out tonight. We're catering Mr. Bennett's birthday party, remember?"

Joy almost laughed. She'd have better luck losing track of her own head than forgetting where she was supposed to be in another couple of hours. And who she would see.

"Remember?" Frankie prompted. "We're going to need you."

Joy made busywork putting her sewing kit back together. She had a feeling her excitement was showing on her face and she didn't want her sister to see it. "I know."

"The party could go late."

"It doesn't matter." Because it wasn't as if she'd be able to sleep when they got back home.

"I don't want you slaving over this dress."

"And you're getting married in a month and a half, so I have to get the thing done. Well, unless you fancy yourself heading down the aisle in your underwear, a sight I'm pretty sure Nate would prefer to keep for his eyes only. Besides, you know I love doing this, especially for you." She turned around. Her sister was staring out the window, absently stroking the gown. "Frankie? What's wrong?"

"Last night, I asked Alex to walk me to the altar."

"What did he say?" Joy whispered, even though she knew getting their brother to the ceremony at all was going to be tough.

"He won't do it. I don't think he wants the attention to be on him." Frankie shook her head. "I can't force him to be by my side. But I really wish…hell, I wish Dad were going to be with me. Mom, as well. I wish they were both still here."

Joy took her sister's hand. "Me, too."

Frankie looked down at herself, her brown hair falling forward. She gave a short, awkward laugh that Joy knew meant she was changing the subject. "I can't believe this."

"What?"

"I don't want to take this thing off. It's so gorgeous."

Joy smiled sadly, thinking that with each stitch she put into the gown, she was trying to make up for everything her sister had done for her. God, all those sacrifices Frankie had made to become a parent too soon. The work on the dress seemed like a pitiful exchange.

"Here, let me undo the buttons in the back for you."

When Frankie stepped out of the pool of satin, Joy swept the dress into her arms and carried it over to her worktable. Her bedroom was small, so between her sewing machine, her mannequin and the bolts of fabric against the wall, space was at a premium. Thank God she only had a twin bed.

Over the years she'd patched and repaired countless ball gowns for their grandmother at her little makeshift sewing station. Emma Moorehouse, better known as Grand-Em, suffered from dementia so she was prone to irrational obsessions. And given that she'd once been a wealthy young lady of fine breeding and reputation, she felt uncomfortable if she didn't look her best for the parties she was certain were just about to start every moment of the day.

Except there were no parties. There hadn't been for decades.

With the declining fortunes of the Moorehouse family, there was no money to replace either the lifestyle or the luxury their grandmother had once known. But Joy was able to keep the Golden Era illusion alive by maintaining the forty- and fifty-year-old ball gowns. In doing so, she helped Grand-Em to find a measure of calm.

And discovered a passion for clothing design in herself.

"We've got three rooms filled this weekend," Frankie said as she pulled on khakis. "Which means the leaf peepers are showing up on schedule."

The White Caps mansion had been built by their ancestors at the turn of the nineteenth century and back then, it had been one of many Moorehouse real estate holdings. Now the ten-bedroom house was all that was left of a once mighty fortune.

In the eighties, their mother and father had turned the place into a bed-and-breakfast. Following their deaths a decade ago, Frankie had struggled to keep the business going, and it appeared that they'd finally turned a corner. The B&B was on the upswing, thanks in large part to Frankie's fiance, Nate Walker. Nate's fine French cooking had made White Caps a destination and his timely investment in the business had pulled them out of a debt spiral.

"So, about tonight." Frankie shoved her feet into a pair of beat-up sneakers. "Spike's going to mind the store here with George on backup. Nate, Tom and I are going to head over to the Bennett kitchen in another hour or so. Can you get there about five?"

"No problem."

"Thank God, Alex is willing to watch Grand-Em. Have you told him what to expect?"

Joy nodded. "I think he'll be okay and Spike's here if she gets really agitated. Fortunately she's been quieter now during evenings."

Stewarding Grand-Em through her delusions was usually Joy's job, but they needed all the hands they could get for the party.

"I'm so glad Gray gave us this chance," Frankie said, drawing her hair back. "He's a good man. For a politician."

He's not a politician, Joy wanted to say. He's a political consultant who specializes in elections.

But the correction might get her sister's attention and Joy was careful about keeping her obsession with Gray to herself. Sharing pipe dreams was almost as futile as having them in the first place.

"You're awful quiet, Joy. Are you sure you want to come tonight?"

"I'm just distracted." By the fact that she was going to get to watch Gray for three, maybe four, hours. And that maybe she'd get a chance to talk with him.

Although the exposure probably wasn't a good thing. After so many years of pining for the man, lately she'd been trying to let the unrequited fascination go. She was going to be twenty-seven soon, for heaven's sake. Living in the fantasy was getting old. And so was she.

"You don't have to come, Joy. I could have one of the waitresses sub."

"I want to," she said firmly. Sort of.

Because he was going to look so good tonight. Gray-son Bennett always looked good. "You work too hard," Frankie said. "So do you."

Frankie shook her head and then stared long and hard across the room. She'd worn glasses until recently, and without the lenses, her eyes seemed bluer than ever.

"You know," she said casually, "I was talking to Tom yesterday. He was asking a lot of questions about you. He's a really nice guy."

Tom Reynolds was the new line cook who'd been hired to help Nate and his partner, Spike, in the kitchen. And he was a nice guy. With a nice guy's sweet smile. And a nice guy's gentle eyes. And a nice guy's polite manner.

Except Joy liked what Gray had. The power. The charisma. The promise of breathtaking, hot sex.

Which probably would have shocked her sister.

If Frankie was the practical one, Joy was supposed to be the prim, protected youngest. Except she was getting bored with being good, especially whenever Gray Bennett came to mind.

Which, in spite of her resolve, was about as often as the grandfather clock downstairs spoke up.

Basically, every fifteen minutes.

"Maybe you and Tom should go out sometime," Frankie said.

Joy shrugged. "Maybe."

As her sister left the room, Joy sat on the bed. She knew her fixation on Gray was unhealthy. Getting tangled up in fantasies about some man she saw maybe five or six times a year was ridiculous. And it wasn't as if he encouraged her. Whenever Gray came up to the lake in the summer and she ran into him in town, he was always friendly. He even remembered her name. But that was as far as it ever got.

Well, except in her dreams. Then it went a whole lot further.

In real life, however, the attraction was totally onesided. She was pretty certain about how Gray perceived her and it was just what she thought of Tom, the line cook. Nice. Sweet. Young.

Completely unremarkable.

And the truly pathetic thing was, even though she knew all that, even though she wanted to forget about Grayson Bennett, she still couldn't wait to see him tonight.

Eh. Great Writing, Poor Ending...
By BookEater99
I don't want to rehash the plot, so I will get straight to my thoughts.

Right out of the starting gate, I liked these characters. Each one has that strong, unique voice I have come to expect in Ward's characters. Gray was powerful, fierce, and commanding, and yet he had that soft under layer that lets you know that he isn't a bad person, but maybe just following down the wrong path. Joy is the type of woman who is caring and thoughtful and gives a lot of herself, probably too much, even at the expense of her own happiness. She has been in love with Gray for years but doesn't really consider herself in his league, not to mention that everyone and their mother seems to be warning her to stay away for her own good.

The story itself was well-written. It had tragedy and sorrow and enough misunderstandings to try a saint's patience. As much as I liked the overall storyline, I was annoyed with Joy and her absolute need to respond to Gray when it seemed to me that, although he had his redeeming qualities, she didn't know that and should have dropped him on his ass, hard...several times. I think what really bothered me about the story, however, isn't all the wishy washy stuff, but the ending.

I have grown somewhat accustomed to the type of endings Ward gives in her BDB and Fallen Angels series that leave me wanting so much more and ready to throw myself over a cliff to get it, that this one left me saying "Huh? Really?" Originality clearly wasn't the name of the game here. Instead, the ending was completely cliched. I can't count how many times this scenario has played out in movies and TV shows where...

*SPOILER ALERT*

...the hero defies death, leaping onto the back of a fast moving train to get to his lady love and plead for her forgiveness, followed up by the spilling of his guts then the down on one knee proposal of which, if she doesn't accept, the lady behind her happily will.

Needless to say, this one fell flat for me. Instead of finishing strong, it took the easy way out. I still love Ward, but I don't know if I will venture into her traditional romance novels again.

Oh, who am I kidding, of course I will! It's J.R. Ward for crying out loud!

another feel good romance

I LOVED THIS BOOK! It's another feel good romance from the Warden herself! I liked it better than the first, even though I saw a lot of people felt the other way around. I think I started liking Joy Moorehouse from the first book. She's the timid, younger girl that has had a crush on the towns' most eligible bachelor her whole life. She's had dreams of giving him her virginity and living happily ever after.

You can't help but like her! But at the same time she's no wilting flower. She has a backbone, she goes after her goals in life and in love. And when she loves she gives herself completely. To her family and to Gray.

Gray Bennett aka Most Eligible Bachelor, is a player as the title suggests. He keeps his job a secret in the small town his from and spends a great deal of time in New York City. While he was back in town visiting his dying father he saw Joy and found that she had transformed from the girl he used to know to a beautiful and sexy woman. And with her air of innocence he should be the last thing around her.'

OK, so I'll admit that the plot where the guy thinks he's no good for the girl and wants to stay away because he will only bring her heartache is good, but to a point. I think that was my only complaint with this book. Gray kept thinking he was bad for Joy. I wanted to slap him sometimes. But that at least didn't stop him from pursuing her. And then there's his trust issue because of seeing his own mother cheat on his dad. So two things that got on my nerves just a bit.

But as you can see the good far outweighs the bad. I thought this story was sexy as hell, Gray being so delicious probably helped. It was also sweet and I loved the fact that it was a completely different story than the first book. With all the society parties going on it had the feeling of a historical romance but set in current times.

I cannot wait to read the next one, although it seems I might be waiting. I'm spoiled and I want to listen to the audiobook like I did with the first two. Which means.... indefinete wait because there's no date announced for the re-release of the last Moorehouse sibling's story! Waaaaaaaaaaa

I didn't care for this one...
By C. Gore
To say I didn't like this book would be unfair. It's not that I did not like it, more that I was indifferent to it, the characters and the outcome and since I was almost half way through the book by the time I put it down (mid-way through chapter 7), that was a problem for me.

I've at time really enjoyed JR Wards writing and at other times been really annoyed by it. This is one of those time I was annoyed by it. The on and on narration was dragging a bit for me so I began skipping paragraphs and then whole pages. Gray's inner dialogue was annoying to me too, it just didn't mesh with the external persona he seemed to exhibit. The whole he's-with-her/she's-with-him misunderstanding was old by chapter 5, so that it was still partially going on in chapter 7 was REALLY old. So when I realized that I was half way into the book and didn't really care if these two ever or never got together, I decided it was time to put it down.

Mine is just one opinion, clearly a lot of other readers enjoyed this book. Personally, I'm just glad I borrowed it from the library instead of buying it.

20 projects from FSM pages
By Avi Chami
This appears to be a selection of articles that originally appeared on Fine Scale Modeler magazine. Being a group of articles that have no connection between them, it's difficult to assign them a global rating.
There are projects for ship, cars, AFV, planes and diorama modelers.
On the positive side, the book has very good photos, a broad selection of themes, and good tips for painting, weathering, modeling battle damage, etc. On the negative side, many of the articles show their age, we are talking about kits from the 80's. Also, I expected to see at least some projects with a true "step to step" description, but there weren't any.
All in all, a good book for beginners, giving a first approach in almost all the fields of scale modeling.

Anyone with "Advanced Modeling Snydrome" will find useful information in this book.

I ordered this book after reviewing a friend's copy. This book provides useful information for improving the details of plastic models. I build model airplanes, so the article on detailing radial engines was especailly useful.
