Thoughtful and comprehensive look at the process

After finishing my own training for dialog editing, I found Purcell's book spot on with what was taught. He clearly explains the industry standards and conventions while showing how one has to think on their own to solve unique issues, communicate with the rest of the sound department, the director, actors and realize the film's vision.

There is a lot to learn here, even if you've edited dialog before. The topic of room tone alone is often misunderstood but he helps clear up confusion about when/how to use it.

The book doesnt patronizing or try to goes a round by his language. Its talking straight to you as an editor. step by step building you as Dialogue editor and construct John famous and modest System.

I was student of John Purcell, and I am using his methods from college time, because of his system I get compliment & awards.

Director that I used to work with John system got compliments for the Sound Editing & Design on her movie from Mike Leigh - The famous Director. that close the case. The book is must in every sound desginer or Dialogue editor who take himself seriously...

The absolute best book on dialogue editing available

Very readable and yet very comprehensive, this book covers just about everything a budding dialogue editor needs to know. After that, it's just about logging hours doing it. Most books on sound for video and film just touch upon simplistic aspects such as cross fading room tone across cuts or normalizing clips. If you want to really get into the fine art (and science) of dialogue editing, there is no other book at this time like this one.

My only gripe with the author and Amazon is that since I already own the hard copy version, they should give me a deep discount on the Kindle version so I can add it to my growing portable library of books on my iPad.

Q. Inferno refers to Dante Alighieri�s The Divine Comedy. What is Dante’s significance? What features of his work or life inspired you?

A. The Divine Comedy—like The Mona Lisa—is one of those rare artistic achievements that transcends its moment in history and becomes an enduring cultural touchstone. Like Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, The Divine Comedy speaks to us centuries after its creation and is considered an example of one of the finest works ever produced in its artistic field. For me, the most captivating quality of Dante Alighieri is his staggering influence on culture, religion, history, and the arts. In addition to codifying the early Christian vision of Hell, Dante’s work has inspired some of history’s greatest luminaries—Longfellow, Chaucer, Borges, Tchaikovsky, Liszt, Monteverdi, Michelangelo, Blake, Dal�—and even a few modern video game designers. Despite Dante’s enduring influence on the arts, however, most of us today have only a vague notion of what his work actually says—both literally and symbolically (which, of course, is of great interest to Robert Langdon). A few years ago, I became very excited about the prospect of writing a contemporary thriller that incorporated the philosophy, history, and text of Dante’s timeless descent into The Inferno.

Q. Where did do your research for Inferno? How long did you spend on it?

A. Researching Inferno began with six months of reading, including several translations of The Divine Comedy, various annotations by Dante scholars, historical texts about Dante’s life and philosophies, as well as a lot of background reading on Florence itself. At the same time, I was poring over all the new scientific information that I could find on a cutting edge technology that I had decided to incorporate into the novel. Once I had enough understanding of these topics to proceed, I traveled to Florence and Venice, where I was fortunate to meet with some wonderful art historians, librarians, and other scholars who helped me enormously.

Once this initial phase of research was complete, I began outlining and writing the novel. As is always the case, when a book begins to take shape, I am drawn in unexpected directions that require additional research. This was also the case with Inferno, which took about 3 years from conception to publication.

With respect to the process, the success of these novels has been a bit of a Catch-22. On one hand, I now have wonderful access to specialists, authorities, and even secret archives from which to draw information and inspiration. On the other hand, because there is increased speculation about my works in progress, I need to be increasingly discreet about the places I go and the specialists with whom I speak. Even so, there is one aspect of my research that will never change—making personal visits to the locations about which I’m writing. When it comes to capturing the feel of a novel’s setting, I find there is no substitute for being there in the flesh...even if sometimes I need to do it incognito.

Q. What kind of adventure will Robert Langdon face this time? Can you give us any sneak peak at the new novel?

A. Inferno is very much a Robert Langdon thriller. It’s filled with codes, symbols, art, and the exotic locations that my readers love to explore. In this novel, Dante Alighieri’s ancient literary masterpiece—The Divine Comedy—becomes a catalyst that inspires a macabre genius to unleash a scientific creation of enormous destructive potential. Robert Langdon must battle this dark adversary by deciphering a Dante-related riddle, which leads him to Florence, where he finds himself in a desperate race through a landscape of classical art, secret passageways, and futuristic technology.

Q. What made Florence the ideal location for Inferno?

A. No city on earth is more closely tied to Dante Alighieri. Dante grew up in Florence, fell in love in Florence, and began writing in Florence. Later in life, when he was exiled for political reasons, the longing he felt for his beloved Florence became a catalyst for The Divine Comedy. Through his enduring poem, Dante enjoyed the “last word” over his political enemies, banishing them to various rings of Inferno where they suffered terrible tortures.

The threat of world overpopulation is the latest assignment for Brown's art historian and accidental sleuth Robert Langdon. Awakening in a Florence hospital with no memory of the preceding 36 hours, Langdon and an attractive attending physician with an oversized intellect are immediately pursued by an ominous underground organization and the Italian police. Detailed tours of Florence, Venice, and Istanbul mean to establish setting, but instead bog down the story and border on showoffmanship. Suspension of disbelief is required as miraculous coincidences pile upon pure luck. That Robert Langdon. He goes through more machinations in 72 hours than a phalanx of folk would in several lifetimes. This time out, the professor wakes up in a Florence hospital unable to remember the last several days. A bullet has grazed his head, and some bad people are after him, but with the help of the lovely Dr. Sienna Brooks, he’s able to escape—and escape and escape, as he slowly comprehends that a plague is quite deliberately about to be released, and it’s his job to figure out the puzzles and symbols that lead to its location. All of Brown’s books have a big idea underpinning them—the family of Jesus, freemasonry—and here one of them is Dante’s Inferno, a theme that will probably resonate more with readers familiar with the work, though many pages are spent explaining the man, his muse, and the influences that shaped the epic poem. The other theme sharing center stage concerns population control and humanity’s determination to be fruitful and multiply itself into oblivion. Is it a worthwhile endeavor to cull the human herd in order to save it? In posing this and other troubling questions, Brown weans himself away from the guidebook atmosphere that permeates the story, as Langdon and Brooks race from Florence to Venice to Istanbul, and asks readers to think about their own answers to the overpopulation dilemma. Fans will once more enjoy the through line of the Langdon formula—the race to find a find an iconic object at the corner of deadly thrills and plot twists. which was excellent from the start to the end

This is the first time that I have read Mr. Brown’s book and I found I just can’t help loving it. It is a complex tale in very interesting language, which was excellent from the start to the end. Dan Brown uses a lot of history and art into the story, which in a way feels like having an art lesson at house. The interesting subject, compelling characterizations, an appealing plot that moves easily from one scene to the next, also remind me of thinking about the world where we live in. What really hit me most is that it also presents some really interesting and deep questions, such as, the future of humanity and a legitimate threat to the species. A good book is not only excellent in its characters and its plots, but also able to inspire its readers to think, to ponder and to make progress. Therefore, I give this five stars and highly recommend you to read it.

A dissapointment of excess

I had enjoyed the first two books of this series, but I did not enjoy this one. It was not the plot at fault, because this was clever with unexpected twists. My reason was that there is a huge amount of detail about art and its history, Florence and Venice. At times it seems an entire page at a time is taken up with detail which often is not necessary for the plot. I grew bored as details of who crafted what and why and its relevance to what the characters were doing, or the detailing of the architecture of a building they were running past. By the midway point I had had enough. From then on I began skimming just to find out what happens in the end. No doubt those with a greater interest in art would have reveled in it, I was just bored. I was also irritated at having to search for the odd nugget to do with the plot amongst a wash of "stuff".
If the author produces another book like this I will not buy it.

Did it have to be so confused?

The only clues to stop the villain are clues left by the villain, who was convinced he shouldn't be stopped. If that logic doesn't stop you, nor does the awful writing, you might like this. As Dante said, and repeatedly quoted in this book, "Abandon hope, ye who enter. Here."

LOVE this journal because I can write the date in myself and I don't have to feel bad about missing a day or not even writing in the journal for months. I am SOO buying more of these for the years ahead. I also love how it has a self care section that basically works you through your senses and through what Dr. Rosenthal talks about as Primary Food as well!

This is a short, easy-reading book that lightly covers the basics of both information security and agile (Scrum) and how they can be integrated effectively. Each section ties to a real-world example from the author's personal experience with an important government integration project, and the themes in those anecdotes are sadly quite familiar to those of us who work in information security on government projects. I encourage you to read this book and work in your own organizations to further the cause of making information security engineering a more agile process.

A fantastic read that explains the importance of SCRUM in a technical manner that is easy to understand. Although the book focused on SCRUM in a security environment it is easy to see how it can be applied to all aspects of a business. My company has just started to implement SCRUM so the timing of the book couldn't be better. I highly recommend it.

"Attend a university if you possibly can. There is no content of knowledge that is not pertinent to the work you will want to do. But before you attend a university work at something for a while. Do anything. Get a job in a potato field; or work as a grease-monkey in an auto repair shop. But if you do work in a field do not fail to observe the look and the feel of earth and of all things that you handle — yes, even potatoes! Or, in the auto shop, the smell of oil and grease and burning rubber. Paint of course, but if you have to lay aside painting for a time, continue to draw. Read all kinds of poetry and know many poets and many artists. Go to and art school, or two, or three, or take art courses at night if necessary. And paint and paint and draw and draw. Know all that you can, both curricular and noncurricular — mathematics and physics and economics,logic and particularly history. Know at least two languages besides your own, but anyway, know French. Look at pictures and more pictures. Look at every kind of visual symbol, every kind of emblem; do not spurn signboards of furniture drawings of this style of art or that style of art. Do not be afraid to like paintings honestly or to dislike them honestly, but if you do dislike them retain an open mind. Do not dismiss any school of art, not the Pre-Raphaelites nor the Hudson River School nor the German Genre painters. Talk and talk and sit at caf�s, and listen to everything, to Brahms, to Brubeck, to the Italian hour on the radio. Listen to preachers in small town churches and in big city churches. Listen to politicians in New England town meetings and to rabble-rousers in Alabama. Even draw them. And remember that you are trying to learn to think what you want to think, that you are trying to co-ordinate mind and hand and eye. Go to all sorts of museums and galleries and to the studios of artists. Go to Paris and Madrid and Rome and Ravenna and Padua. Stand alone in Sainte Chapelle, in the Sistine Chapel, in the Church of the Carmine in Florence. Draw and draw and paint and learn to work in many media; try lithography and aquatint and silk-screen. Know all that you can about art, and by all means have opinions. Never be afraid to become embroiled in art of life or politics; never be afraid to learn to draw or paint better than you already do; and never be afraid to undertake any kind of art at all, however exalted or however common, but do it with distinction."

What is Art?

What's good about this book is that it defines art and discusses what it should be. Shahn says art is conventional and noncomformist, and it should be objective and subjective. The definition of art is the key point I found useful. I did, however, think that he could've kept it a little shorter. He digresses a lot. It's still a quick read (131pgs). I recommend this book to artists, whether writer, painter, etc., who are having trouble finding subject matter to depict or are unsure about what appeals to audiences.

About the Author
Douglas Soccio was professor of philosophy at Shasta College for nearly 30 years. In addition to ARCHETYPES OF WISDOM: AN INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY, 9E, he is the author of HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF PHILOSOPHY, and, with Vincent E. Barry, PRACTICAL LOGIC, all of which are published by Cengage Learning. For three years he wrote a weekly philosophy column for the REDDING RECORD SEARCHLIGHT. Now devoted to writing on a full-time basis, he is presently developing a collection of philosophical stories that express what he describes as "philosophy with a heart," a generous notion of philosophy that infuses all of his writing.

Should be required reading for all college freshmen

Although the title of this book would lead one to think that it is mostly advice on how take college philosophy courses, it is way more than that. I hate to overstate the case, but in many ways this is an excellent life guide. Why? Because Professor Soccio discusses not only the nuts and bolts of taking philosophy courses, but also the personal foundations - of character, behaviors and values - that an individual needs to not only succeed in Philosophy 101, but to also lead a life with purpose. For example, in treating the matter of college class attendance, Soccio reminds the reader that he or she is attending college as a choice, and that this is not done in a vacuum of personal isolation. No, there are professors who have a genuine interest in the student learning and growing, there are financial institutions that have contributed money for the student's fees and tuition, etc. The full picture includes a lot more than the student's desire to go to class or not. For every topic covered - class discussion, completion of assignments, recommendations, etc. - Soccio gives more than just the standard reasons and expands into areas where most college advice books don't tread. And the advice that Soccio give is applicable to all aspects of life, whether you are entering college, a senior about to graduate, or a middle-aged government bureaucrat(sounds familiar). The writing is filled with both life wisdom and philosophy wisdom, so that Professor Soccio exhibits his eminent qualifications to give advice. If you are a parent with a child going to college, please have them read this book. I am going to have my high school senior start on it right away.

Title should be "How to get the most out of College"

I bought the book because I saw it was written by the same author as my textbook for intro to philosophy class. It's great! Almost all the advice in the book can be more broadly applied to any academic activity. Chapters on reading, writing are especially useful to students of history, english, sociology as well as philosophy. Highly recommended!!!

my favorite from Hesse

When I read about this book, way back when I read a lot of classics, the essay I read said this was Herman Hesse's least important book and the characters weren't"real". Curious, I read it in one sitting and loved it. Typical!
I saw this available on Kindle and thought I'd read it again and see if, like many books I read in my twenties, this one no longer pleased me. Surprise! Still like it a lot. Are the characters real? They are in the sense that people are still like this: they still do stupid things, feel sorry for themselves, fall in love with their best friend's girl, create music, don't understand their parents and commit suicide sometimes. And those real actions make them real enough for me.
If you don't mind a book without car chases, serial killers or sex give this a try.

Another great read from Hesse

Hesse is my favorite author. Each of his works has touched me in some way. My only regret is that I didn't start reading his books earlier in life. However, maybe I would not have appreciated them as much without a boat load of life experiences.
