An Aussie Philosopher of Happiness!

For those of us who’ve had the pleasure of knowing Dr Bruce as a colleague and or “mate” (buddy) –both indeed – the old adage that “the style is the man” surely applies. In his new book – a veritable vade mecum revealing the secrets of daily and life-long happiness – Dr Bruce’s own optimistic world outlook infects ever page.
Undoubtedly, Happiness Anywhere Anytime will surely garner a wide readership ranging from those browsing in the self-help and improvement sections of bookstores seeking practical help on how to live a happier and more fulfilling life to professional psychological therapists to academics with an interest in different views on human happiness, be they of a programmatic kind (like Dr Bruce’s) or philosophers or historians of ideas interested in how present-day approaches to happiness relate to received conceptions. For a broad readership, then, Dr Bruce’s book offers food for thought and a practical approach to creating a state of everyday well-being suffused with self-engendered happiness.
Belonging to the academic readership for Dr Bruce’s book, I’d like to offer a moot comparison with the aim of stimulating whoever reads this appraisal to buy Dr Bruce’s volume. When I heard recently that he’d produced his new book I immediately made the comparison with a tract I first read as student, since which time I’ve read many times over the years. The book referred to is Bertrand Russell’s evergreen The Conquest of Happiness (1930). I’m not sure if Dr Bruce has read Russell’s volume but, if he hasn’t, then he can have the intellectual pleasure of seeing that the words Russell uses at the start of the Preface to his book could – mutatis mutandis – have been penned by Dr B himself!
“This book is not addressed to the learned, or to those who regard a practical problem merely as something to be talked about. No profound philosophy or deep erudition will be found in the following pages. I have aimed only at putting together some remarks which are inspired by what I hope is common sense. All that I claim for the recipes offered to the reader is that they are such as are confirmed by my own experience and observation, and that they have increased my own happiness whenever I have acted in accordance with them. On this ground I venture to hope that some among those multitudes of men and women who suffer unhappiness without enjoying it, may find their situation diagnosed and a method, of escape suggested. It is in the belief that many people who are unhappy could become happy by well-directed effort that I have written this book.”
On reading these words we may well ask: is Dr Bruce’s project the conquest of happiness or, rather, unhappiness? I leave it to the attentive reader to follow up this comparison and make up his/her own mind.
There’s one main difference though between Russell’s and Dr Bruce’s approaches that again I highlight with the sole aim of nudging readers of this review to buy and read Happiness Anywhere Anytime. Whereas Dr Bruce is convinced that the source of personal happiness lies within oneself, Russell’s view is, to quote from the final chapter of The Conquest of Happiness entitled “The Happy Man”:
“Where outward circumstances are not definitely unfortunate, a man should be able to achieve happiness, provided that his passions and interests are directed outward, not inward. It should be our endeavour therefore, both in education and in attempts to adjust ourselves to the world, to aim at avoiding self-centred passions and at acquiring those affections and those interests which will prevent our thoughts from dwelling perpetually upon ourselves. It is not the nature of most men to be happy in a prison, and the passions which shut us up in ourselves constitute one of the worst kinds of prisons.”
However, despite this difference, Russell and Dr Bruce concur in suggesting “cures for the ordinary day-to-day unhappiness from which most people in civilized countries suffer.” Is there not a more praiseworthy enterprise?

Simple to-the-point ways to find "elusive happiness"

Happiness is elusive. This is even truer these days as we struggle with our never ending activities. This book is a rare gem I highly recommend to anybody who seeks for happiness from simple, daily things in life. Bruce Wells makes strong, important points that the happiness should not always come from external factors but rather from inside out. Happiness also is characterized by contentment, fulfillment and peacefulness. As someone with Buddhism background, I find some resemblances of what he proposed with the Buddhist teaching and meditation. However, his illustrations are made in a more general and universal conceptions which are easy to understand and connects with us in our ordinary circumstances. The title itself is quite simple so may be overlooked yet when I came across every page, the significance of Bruce points became more apparent and relevant. Happiness is often treated as a destination rather than a process. We often believe that we should only be happy when we achieve our expectation. This point is clarified in one of his sub-chapters which highlights the importance of "Don't let your expectations control your happiness". Another strong point is that we are responsible for our own happiness by looking for "silver cloud" in anything that happens to us whether it is good or particularly when it is bad. Some other points are curiosity, positive thinking and attitude, danger of stereotyping and mindfulness. As a stress management expert, this book really reflects Bruce's expertise to train people to be more happy through simple theory.

Happiness Anywhere Anytime is a well written engaging book, addressing the steps to achieving greater happiness.
The structure of the book provides options for the reader. Each short story in the first half of the book includes a concept for greater happiness.
As I read these delightful personal tales, told by Dr. Bruce Wells, I enjoyed staying in the moment with my responses and mulling over these. He shares his thoughts, experiences and values in a humorous and warm way that resonated for me around our shared humanity.
Each story and concept for greater happiness is linked with an activity section in the second half of the book. These activities are practical, easy to undertake and achievable. Dr. Bruce Wells has drawn on evidence based theories for his activities which will guarantee the reader positive changes in their life if they complete and practice these.
We all strive for happiness and fulfilment in our lives. This book provokes thoughts and reflections around your personal happiness and what you may want this to look like in the future. It imparts encouragement, inspiration and confidence to the reader to make changes for greater happiness and provides clear steps towards achieving this.
This is a book to be kept close by, to read and revisit at different times. I highly recommend Happiness Anywhere Anytime by Dr. Bruce Wells.
