Six by Leiber

The New Encyclopedia of Science Fiction points out that "there is no such thing as a 'typical Fritz Leiber story.'" Leiber wrote supernatural horror, sword & sorcery fantasy, hard science fiction, humorous social-satire science fiction, alternate history stories and other pieces impossible to categorize. This anthology collects six novelettes and short stories which Leiber published between 1957 and 1963; five of them originally appeared in Galaxy, and the title piece was in Amazing. They are all science fiction, but still show several different facets of Leiber's talent.
"The Night of the Long Knives" is a post-nuclear holocaust novelette which is harrowing even by the standards of such stories, but ultimately hopeful of humans' capacity for growth and redemption. (The story alludes to 12-step programs, hinting at Leiber's own struggles with alcohol throughout his career.) "The Moon Is Green" is another post-nuclear holocaust tale, but quite different from "The Night of the Long Knives"; it is a tribute to Leiber's creativity that he could envision two very different (but equally terrible) possible outcomes of a nuclear war.
"Bread Overhead" is a very different kind of science fiction--a funny, if slight, satire of Madison Avenue ad campaigns. "The Creature from Cleveland Depths" is also satire, but more substantial; it very accurately predicts our present-day addiction to cybernetic gadgets, and warns that our computerized toys may be controlling us, rather than the other way around.
"No Great Magic" is one of Leiber's Change War stories, part of a series of tales in which two vast cosmic forces battle each other, using events in earth's history as pawns. (Leiber also wrote an excellent novel about the Change War: The Big Time (Annotated, Science Fiction)).
Finally, this anthology includes a warm, funny (but thought-provoking) short story, "What's He Doing in There?", which wonders what would happen if an alien from outer space asked to use your bathroom. Something to think about....
