from #1 worldwide bestselling author Jeffrey Archer
The sweeping saga of the Cliftons―across generations, from Europe to America, through heartache and rivalry and triumph―is about to reach its stunning conclusion. Harry Clifton’s story began in 1920, as a dock worker in England, and now he is set to write his magnum opus. As he reflects on his days, the lives of his family continue to unfold, unravel, and intertwine in ways no one could have imagined . . .
Harry’s wife Emma, who just completed her time at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, receives a surprise call from Margaret Thatcher. Meanwhile, Giles Barrington discovers a shocking truth about his wife, Karin. Sebastian Clifton becomes chairman of Farthings Kaufman bank, but only after Hakim Bishara’s abrupt resignation. Sebastian’s daughter Jessica is expelled from school, but her aunt Grace comes to the rescue. And Lady Virginia, who is set to flee the country to avoid her creditors, finds an opportunity to clear her debts after the Duchess of Hertford dies―and a way to finally trump the Cliftons and Barringtons.

A final end to an excellent series.
By Wayne Robinson
The good news is that this is definitely the last volume of the Clifton Chronicles (as if you'd need to be told this after reading the title of this volume). There's no cliffhanger ending, and all the loose threads have been tied off, including the big one - whether Harry Clifton and Emma Barrington are brother and sister (and they'd committed incest in marrying) or not.

The cliffhanger ending of the previous novel proceeded more or less as expected in this one, so there weren't any surprises.

Jeffrey Archer could have done with a proofreader of the quality Harry Clifton enjoyed in this novel. Some of the medical details he includes are just wrong, and even if they were, events wouldn't have happened the way described (I won't reveal the details in case it's a spoiler). Anyway - a Sotheby's auctioneer would never refer to the Emperor Jiaqing (Jiaqing is the name of an era, not a person). It's the Jiaqing Emperor.

It's a very satisfying series. In a few years, I'll probably go back and reread them, one after the other (it's actually the best way of reading them - not having to wait a year for each new one to be published).

and it is the one that launched my love of reading
By Leppo
First, you must understand that I view Jeffrey Archer as a god (lower case is intentional...I'm not a complete heretic); Kane and Abel was the first book I ever read for pleasure, and it is the one that launched my love of reading. Lord Archer remains my favorite author, and I'm proud to declare that I've read everything he has published for the general public. However, "This Was a Man" was clearly written with an intent to just tying up loose strings. Sorry, but it was disappointing...I still wouldn't have skipped it...But I expect more from "the master". Please don't hate me Jeff, you're still totally awesome.

Predictable.
By Gina A. Emory
It is clear Archer has grown weary of the Clifton and Barrington families. The elements that drew me to the series when I stumbled across the first book have been sorely lacking in the last few. The only reason to read this book is to have closure. I will miss the characters, although they had become just shadows of their former selves. Time to move on.
