Astonishingly the work of two first-time creators, this is a book that both takes full advantage of its form and offers something unique in the current graphic-novel market: a deep strangeness that pervades every panel, every figure, and even every object within. Although Dunning’s humorously dry writing and the bizarrely calm affect of an array of enjoyable characters help create the creepy tone, Singh’s flowing, surreal perspectives and vaguely Ditko-esque landscapes of alternate planes are what will cast readers into an unfamiliar and occasionally uncomfortable world. Even amid the constant barrage of obtuse and off-kilter imaginings, there are indelible images that stand out: tortured smoke haunting the air over a mansion; intertwined souls trapped within the insectoid eye of a fly. What’s it about? Well, the plot concerns Salem’s inheritance of a magic orb from his deceased father, after which he is abetted by the freakish denizens of Dr. Kinoshita’s Circus and opposed by the Seven Dark Elders of Midnight City. Beautiful, Creepy & Macabre!

Reason for Reading: I was immediately taken with the publisher's eerie plot summary.

This is a beautiful book. Oversized like a large picture book with decorated cloth covered boards, it feels like a treasure in your hands. Upon opening the book, the story grips you right away as if something by Poe. Then turn the page where the artwork starts and immediately Gory comes to mind and the further one gets into the story with the mixture of art and text their is a very strong Tim Burton vibe going and I actually started imaging the story being filmed with Johnny Depp as Salem Brownstone. The artwork is truly masterful. Each frame is so detailed, this book could take many readings and each reading would reveal something you had missed the previous times through. How do I describe the art? Outlandish, eerie, macabre, bizarre and just outright fiendishly freakish (in a good way!).

Salem Brownstone, a grown man, who hasn't seen his father since he was six receives a telegram that his father has died and left him his mansion and the contents and he must come claim it ASAP that evening at 9pm. Upon arrival Salem finds an old creepy Victorian house and notices a sign announcing a circus nearby. Once inside he discovers his father was a magician and dons the cape, when he hears a noise. As he investigates he happens upon Cassandra Contortionist who has been waiting for him. She has a scrying orb that belonged to his father that she must pass on to him. She takes him down to the circus for further explanation and it is here he learns that he must take over his father's role in keeping the world safe from the evil creatures of another dimension.

This is a macabre story and certainly not going to be for everyone but if you like Poe or Lovecraft then this will be along your tastes. The atmosphere is very dark and heavy, the story is very creepy and when you think you've seen it all something even creepier happens. I was engrossed with the story and the whole book itself. A wonderful Hallowe'en read. From the ending, there are hints that Salem may appear in a sequel.

Surreal!

This is a very, very good and strange graphic novel. The story is well mounted and drives you through that strange world in its own steady pace, but everything is diffracted, stretched, transformed by Nikhil's psychodelic drawing. The combination of both is something very hard to classify, there is something of a classical american comic book in the standard division of the chapters and the story move, there is some early Moebius, some late Moebius, with some depressive, dark, noir tar-like paint in the corners, both in the drawings and the story, and a fantasy feel that is different from both usual american and european graphic novel style...

It's not an average good-for-all comic book, but definitely a fine and delicious gem for connaisseurs.

I literally borrowed this from a library and just opened it and had to buy it. I didnt even read it before then. I needed it, it has so much art in it and it looks like it took a long bit of hard work and I seriously respected it. Its like a giant book of art, loveeee

Trent Shelton - an inspirer to humanity

I haven't read the entire book yet, but I do follow Trent on Twitter and know this young man personally and I can say that this is one true man of GOD that is consistent with not only his beliefs but also consistent with his purpose in life..He has truly harnessed what GOD has called him to do in life and has grown into a man of wisdom too, so I can assure that this inspiring book is not only insightful but also life-changing for all those who have experienced heartbreak...Trent's wisdom of the word of God and life is beyond the average 20'something year old male. This is one authentic man after God's heart and with that God is definitely leading him, so don't take this book lightly because it's not from the words of Trent but rather the voice of God speaking through Trent's mouth :) Get your copy now!

I really must say that anything God has blessed Trent and Baylor to do has reached and touched millions in a huge spiritual way. I don't even know how I became connected with RehabTime but I am very thankful to God that I am. I have been going through a lot a mess from job loss, to divorce to much more in the last 4 years and God has really used many avenues to restore and comfort me. One of those avenues in RehabTime and I hope that it continues to grow and reach many more. I am an educator and I hope that some day soon Trent and Baylor can come speak to my students because I am working at an alternative school.

God bless you 2 and keep living out your purpose with God!

In 1929, he took the SS-a small bodyguard unit-and swelled it into a paramilitary organization with elite pretensions. By the end of 1934 he had become Reich Chief of the Political Police, and began to consolidate all police power in his own hands. As Germany grabbed neighboring territory, he expanded the Waffen SS and organized the "Germanization" of conquered lands, which culminated in systematic mass murder. When the regime went on the defensive in 1942, Himmler changed his emphasis again, repressing any opposition or unrest. The author emphasizes the centrality of Himmler's personality to the Nazi murder machine-his surveillance of the private lives of his men, his deep resentments, his fierce prejudices-showing that man and position were inseparable.

Peter Longerich is Professor of Modern German History at Royal Holloway University of London and founder of the College's Holocaust Research Centre. He has published widely on the history of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, including Holocaust: The Nazi Murder and Persecution of the Jews, also published by Oxford University Press, which is widely recognized as the standard account of the Nazi machinery of mass murder and the steps by which it unfolded.

A fascinating book. You won't want to put it down.

This is a fascinating book. It's not the usual "Himmler, the Nazi monster who wades knee deep in blood" type of book, but a very intimate look at his early life and how his experiences growing up shaped the way he thought and acted. I was surprised to learn just how much he was involved with the tiniest details of how the SS men and their families lived and worked. No personal detail of an SS man's life was too small to escape his attention. The book certainly does not explain away or excuse any of the horrors and atrocities that the SS were guilty of (nor does it attempt to), but it does provide a very detailed look at Himmler the child, Himmler the adolescent, Himmler the adult and the various things that happened to him and his family throughout his early years that shaped him into what he became. I would also heartily recommend seeing the movie "The Decent One" which follows this book quite closely (although nowhere near in as great a detail). A lot of information in this book (and the movie mentioned above) was obtained from recently discovered personal diaries and photographs kept by Himmler, his wife and his daughter. It's all put together in a fascinating and easy to read format, woven together with other historical facts filling in the blanks. This is probably the most complete and accurate picture of Heinrich Himmler that I've ever encountered, and I've learned a lot from it. Highly recommend it!

Very well researched, but leaves gaps

This is a very well researched book and certainly deserves five stars. However, there are some aspects of the book which are puzzling. The first 150 pages or so give a very detailed portrait of an almost-sympathetic young nerd who is clumsy, tries hard to blend in, and, though bright, is an almost-classic overachieving wonk. Suddenly, shortly after the war, be joins the Nazi party and becomes a sinister, manipulative, conspiratorial but brilliant organizational genius. His world-view, which was previously both morally rigid and conventional, became vicious, murderous, and bizarre. Longerich does very little to explain how this caterpillar suddenly morphed into this nightmarish moth. He adds a few psychological theories, but these are both conventional and rather unhelpful. The remainder of the book deals almost entirely with Himmler's professional life, which is a string of attrocities, murders and infighting. Relatively little is said about Himmler the man or his personal life after 1930, perhaps because he did not have any. But there are interesting hints, such as that their daughter defended him vigorously even after his death, or that he attracted a highly loyal and even professional following. And how did the very antithesis of an Aryan physique or deportment encounter virtually no problems identifying with the Nazi ideology or being accepted by its minions?

This is surely an interesting and important book. But the issue of how this harmless-seeming wimp could transform into a world class monster has a fascination beyond this evil man himself.

Required reading.

If you value your freedom, your families freedom and future generations to carry your name, it's a must read to learn of millions of others who desired the same future and dreams but those dreams shattered and never lived because of the idea of ethnic cleansing by madmen. If you ignore the tragedies of previous lives you cannot prepare and protect today and tomorrow the future of you and your children. Reading only one book or only one author is not the answer. Read as many different ones as you can. I'm not highly educated and I apologize for any written mistakes, only writing what is from my heart and my love and respect for all human beings.
