About the Author
Christine Caivano is a movement therapist and educator. Originally a dancer she taught Jazz dance to adults while also choreographing and performing. she became intrigued by the needs and potential of her adult students, so decided to re-focus her work, studying dance therapy in London, continuing her research in anatomy, kinesiology, and education, and recieveing an M.A in dance education from Columbia Unitiversity. After creating dance/ movement therapy programs at two psychiatric hospitals in Sacramento, she them retrurned to New York City, where she developed her current movement therapy/exercise education practice, specializing in 50 - 95 year olds. Over 30 years of experience and study have given her a personal, eclectic, move , look, and feel once they understand how to do it.

Great for the weak

I was really searching for a routine that didn't depend on lunges or hard on the knee activities and that is what this book does. I know I'm weak and out of shape. I've learned to start at a minimum level and it worked with this book. I'm gaining strength without injury after about three weeks of using the routines. If you are in great shape I'm not sure you need this book, but for most of us it is reasonable, though I don't always get three days a week. There was also a learning curve which slows the first few times you do the routine--it took over an hour with checking the instructions carefully (necessary not to get hurt!). Still, I would highly recommend if you have knee concerns.

A little basic for me but is a good book for someone just starting out and wanting to get into an exercise program that will help them and that they can stick with.

About the Author

Diana DiNitto is Cullen Trust Centennial Professor in Alcohol Studies and Education and Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas at Austin where she teaches courses in social welfare policy, alcohol and drug problems, research, and pedagogy. She has a MSW degree and a Ph.D. in government from Florida State University. She has worked in detoxification, halfway house, and outpatient chemical dependency treatment programs. She is also coauthor of Chemical Dependency: A Systems Approach, Fourth Edition (Allyn & Bacon, 2012) and Social Work: Issues and Opportunities in a Challenging Profession, Third Edition (Lyceum Books, 2008). Her research is on substance abuse, violence against women, and social welfare policy. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare and serves as a member of its Social Work Grand Challenges Executive Committee. Dr. DiNitto has served on the boards of the Council and Social Work Education, the Association for Medical Education and Research on Substance Abuse, and the Texas Research Society on Alcoholism. She has been a visiting professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Sydney (Australia), and Tallinn University (Estonia). She is an advocate for better-informed drug policies and often speaks on the subject.

 

David Johnson is an Associate Professor of Social Work at Millersville University. He teaches courses in social welfare policy from both economics and legal frameworks perspectives as well as macro practice and human behavior in the social environment across both undergraduate and graduate social work programs. He is a mediator certified to practice before the Texas courts and has developed electives in mediation at both the undergraduate and graduate level at Millersville. Dr. Johnson is the coauthor with Diana M. DiNitto of Essentials of Social Welfare: Politics and Public Policy (Allyn & Bacon, 2013) and co-authored two chapters in the Seventh Edition of Social Welfare: Politics and Public Policy (Allyn & Bacon, 2011). He has also authored or co-authored a number of instructor resources for Pearson in the policy area over the past several years. He has presented at numerous national and regional conferences. He was previously affiliated with the Health Behavior Research and Training Institute at the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to that, he served as Executive Director of AIDS Services Coalition of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He has served on numerous boards of directors in several states and currently serves as President of the Lancaster County (PA) Medical Foundation. He is a member of the Council on Social Work Education.

It Works; It is Practical

I have used this book to teach harmonica for over four years. It is very simple, inexpensive and doesn't get involved in so much nonsense, a common flaw in beginning harmonica books. There could be far more songs--far more extensive tips--but it is a small, easy to carry book, and decisions had to be made about content. It does have enough tips and songs to serve the beginner well. I've used it--and continue to use it.

I found the book very easy to read and helpful. It has anything from cleaning your harmonica to music. Within a few hours I had learned almost half the book, before hand I never knew how to play a song on a harmonica. I would reccommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to play a harmonica quickly.

No real advanced harmonica lessons in this little book, but the price is right and it a good start for the harp beginner. Also going for it, the book has a lot of songs set in simple harmonica notation.

Typically, if the two main characters are going to get married, it happens at the end. Then again, this isn't your typical wedding. It's just part of the first big twist in a book full of more sharp turns than an IndyCar race.

Pleasantly surprised and impressed by the author

I was given an ARC of the book, Forged in Fire to read and to give my honest review. I personally don't read in the genre of science fiction, with that being said, I will admit that I was drawn in by the title, cover art and story line. I am happy that I took a chance and stepped outside my personal reading box. Taking plane in a futuristic world, I found Ms. Riddle-DeClerck characters believable as they fight a war between good versus evil. The author spins a tale that keeps the reader eagerly following Gin and Maeve, two star-crossed lovers, as the people of Dinara battle against the control seeking Boderians, led by their cruel, evil Prince who covets the lovely Maeve; doing everything in his power to claim her for his own. Luna, the adorable daughter of Gin and Maeve, lends an innocence and a child's faith to the darker moments of the book. The little girl, happy to be with her father, is the key in bringing her parents back together after a past misunderstanding and betrayal. The love shining from his child brings the Sword Guardian of Dinara, back to the only woman who can complete his soul.
I fell in love with the grey-bearded space pirate, Tyr. Appearing to be a money hungry scavenger, you soon discover the man's character of honor hiding beneath the cocky, smiling demeanor. I do hope to hear more of Tyr's history; his secondary character, along with his Boderian outlaw sidekick intrigued me throughout the book's pages. Both men add to the plot. Well written and beautifully edited, Forged in Fire does end with a small cliff hanger, leaving the reader patiently waiting for the next installment. I look forward to it. Five stars for a job well done.

Mature SFR for Action-lovers (& those who prefer smokin' hot war heroes)!

I loved the mature emotional nuances of this story. From the friendships with secondary characters to the betrayal (not a silly constructed romance-novel betrayal, but a misunderstanding built on the savagery of war) that separated the characters, to the love story itself and the "complication" of Luna, this is science fiction romance for adults. It helps that it is wrapped in a package of non-stop action with a heroine who is strong, resourceful, and unapologetic for the decisions she's made and a hero who is...well, Gin is HOT. He may be my favorite hero in a long while. I highly recommend this read.

Unpredictable and inventive

Forged in Fire is the story of Gin Draven, the Sword Guardian of Dinara, and Maeve, who marries him very early in the book. Though they have previously loved one another, it is abundantly clear from the outset that there isn't much love lost. Not least as Gin believed Maeve betrayed him some years previously, that she was a traitor, and that she was dead.

The simple background is that Dinara, a world among nine in a system, is at war with Boderia - another world in the same system. The Dinarans receive support from Maeve's father, and he requests a marriage with the Sword Guardian for one of his daughters in return for continued support in the war. And when Gin Draven - who at first glance (for the reader) is impersonable, grumpy and disinclined to be nice to a new wife - discovers who his surprise new wife is to be, his world heads for a spin.

It isn't long before the Dinaran Swords are engaged in a battle with Boderians, except Maeve discovers where the Boderians are attacking, and reveals that the pair have a daughter. Gin may not be on best terms with Maeve, but he isn't letting a possible daughter of his get caught by the Boderians.

What I really enjoy about DeClerck's work is that it is generally unpredictable, and inventive to boot. There were several developments I did not see coming, and as usual I keep thinking I must be nearing the end of the book (despite NOT being anywhere near the end) and then a new twist arrives that takes the story further and deeper. While Gin Draven was initially NOT attractive, through the story he developed into a very protective person who would do everything within his power to protect those he loves. But Maeve holds her agency just as well, and is an equal partner with Gin in all they do. Each has their strengths and weaknesses, and these were well covered in the story - not laboriously, but acknowledged and displayed is what I mean.

With some polish, though, this book could be a real diamond. It was regrettable that there were some editorial issues here and there - but not so bad as to detract from the story itself.
