The Forever War, by Joe Haldeman

Private William Mandella is a hero in spite of himself -- a reluctant conscript drafted into an elite military unit, and propelled through space and time to fight in a distant thousand-year conflict. He never wanted to go to war, but the leaders on Earth have drawn a line in the interstellar sand -- despite the fact that their fierce alien enemy is unknowable, unconquerable, and very far away. So Mandella will perform his duties without rancor and even rise up through the military's ranks . . . if he survives. But the true test of his mettle will come when he returns to Earth. Because of the time dilation caused by space travel the loyal soldier is aging months, while his home planet is aging centuries -- and the difference will prove the saying: you never can go home. . .

Amazon.com Review
In the 1970s Joe Haldeman approached more than a dozen different publishers before he finally found one interested in The Forever War. The book went on to win both the Hugo and Nebula Awards, although a large chunk of the story had been cut out before it saw publication. Now Haldeman and Avon Books have released the definitive version of The Forever War, published for the first time as Haldeman originally intended. The book tells the timeless story of war, in this case a conflict between humanity and the alien Taurans. Humans first bumped heads with the Taurans when we began using collapsars to travel the stars. Although the collapsars provide nearly instantaneous travel across vast distances, the relativistic speeds associated with the process means that time passes slower for those aboard ship. For William Mandella, a physics student drafted as a soldier, that means more than 27 years will have passed between his first encounter with the Taurans and his homecoming, though he himself will have aged only a year. When Mandella finds that he can't adjust to Earth after being gone so long from home, he reenlists, only to find himself shuttled endlessly from battle to battle as the centuries pass. --Craig E. Engler

Review

“To say that The Forever War is the best science fiction war novel ever written is to damn it with faint praise. It is, for all its techno-extrapolative brilliance, as fine and woundingly genuine a war story as any I've read.” ―William Gibson, author of Neuromancer, Spook Country

“There are a handful of moments when an American science fiction novel abruptly and seemingly effortlessly satisfied every possible expectation conveyed not only by the genre's ambitions, but of those of the whole literary landscape with which it was contemporary: Sturgeon's More Than Human, Dick's The Man In The High Castle, LeGuin's Dispossessed, Gibson's Neuromancer. The Forever War is one such book, and like those others still carries with it that air of recognition and possibility.” ―Jonathan Lethem, author of Gun With Occcasional Music, Fortress of Solitude

“Perhaps the most important war novel written since Vietnam . . . Haldeman, a veteran, is a flat-out visionary . . . and protagonist William Mandella's attempt to survive and remain human in the face of an absurd almost endless war is harrowing hilarious heartbreaking and true . . . like all the best works of literature THE FOREVER WAR takes you apart and then, before you can turn that last page, puts you back together: better, wiser, more human. Simply extraordinary.” ―Junot Diaz, Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao

“If there was a Fort Knox for Science Fiction writers, we'd have to lock Joe Haldeman up.” ―Stephen King, author of The Shining, The Dead Zone, The Stand

“The Forever War is not just a great Science Fiction novel, it's a great Vietnam war novel - and a great war novel, without qualification- that is also Science Fiction. A classic to grace either genre.” ―James Sallis, author of The Long Legged Fly, Drive, Cripple Creek

“FOREVER WAR is brilliant--one of the most influential war novels of our time. That it happens to be set in the future only broadens and enhances its message.” ―Greg Bear, author of Moving Mars, Eon, The Forge of God

“A parable whose lessons are needful learning once more.” ―John Scalzi, author of Old Man’s War, The Ghost Brigades, Zoe’s Tale

“I first read this twenty years ago and have never forgotten the wonder and fury it kindled at the time. Anyone who talks about the glory of war has obviously never read it. A beautifully detailed and intensely personal account of a conflict which lasts for over a thousand years, as told by one grunt who lives through it all. Only a writer as skillfull and knowledgeable as Haldeman could use war's dark glamour to lure the reader in and then deplou the sam fascination to show just what kind of effect this orchestrated barbarism can have on the human soul.” ―Peter F. Hamilton, author of Pandora’s Star, Judas Unchained, The Dreaming Void

“In a literature of ideas, The Forever War is a titan: a book filled with mind-bending ideas about relatavistic time-distortion and world-shaking ideas about the futility of war. In today's world, where we think declaring war on abstract nouns like TERROR is a winning strategy, we need THE FOREVER WAR.” ―Cory Doctorow, author of Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, Little Brother X

“It is to the Vietnam War what Catch-22 was to World War II, the definitive, bleakly comic satire.” ―Thomas M. Disch, author of Camp Concentration, 334

“The Forever War does what the very best science fiction does. It deals with extremes both societal and teleological; it places a frame around humankind's place in the universe to show us what is outside the frame; and it functions simultaneously at the literal and metaphorical level. Inarguably one of the genre's great novels, it is also among the finest novels ever written about war.” ―James Sallis, author of The Long Legged Fly, Drive, Cripple Creek

Space opera with a humanistic heart. Superb!
By Claude Avary
Haldeman originally wrote this novel as an allegory of the Vietnam war, told through the eyes of a reluctant soldier caught up in a battle that never seemed to end, while the world he left behind changed drastically. However, it applies to all wars, in any time, and the book has never lost its timeliness.
Main character William Mandella serves in the war against the mysterious Taurans, which, because of time dilation udring his spaceship travels, lasts for seven hundred years while Mandella ages only ten. Earth alters, lifestyles completely change, and Mandella wonders the purpose of the senseless warfare.
Although specifically allegorical, Haldeman's novel is powerful enough to apply to all combat. In a way, this could be seen as the opposite to Heinlein's _Starship Troopers_, with reluctant soldiers caught in purposeless combat, and a hero who is neither more skilled or heroic than any other solider around him-he has merely lasted longer than the others. The book has many great touching moments in between the furious combat scenes (a few of which are confusing), such a Mandella's separation from his love Marygay Potter, and a sad return to an Earth that has aged beyond their understanding.
A deserving classic of many awards, and I'm sure it will never age as long as warfare is still with us.

This is not the version you're looking for.
By Amazon Customer
The Forever War is one of my favorite books. I've read it at least ten times over the years. However, what you're getting here is NOT the version you probably remember. It's an unedited version. Now, I'm sure you're thinking "Great! I LOVE the book, so more of it can only be a good thing. Right?"

Wrong.

It's Haldeman's terse prose and direct writing style that make The Forever War a great novel. Without the discipline and restraint that previous editors imposed upon his work, Haldeman rambles on like your great-grandpa telling you about life during the Great Depression. There are at least two entire chapters devoted to describing how Earth's economy is now based on calories instead of dollars. And by the end of those two chapters, Haldeman himself seems to conclude that it's dumb, impractical idea that's not very interesting in the first place.

There are reasons that the original cuts were made. What was once tense, quotable, action-packed and provocative is now a lumbering beast, sagged down by tons of extraneous ramblings that don't add to the story even a little.

I certainly don't expect you to believe me. And in fact, I suppose some of you might even like the extra material, bland and superflous as it is. But for me, this version is a rough draft. I would much prefer to have a copy of the edited version. Editing is NOT a dirty word- it's part of the craft of writing.

Okay- if you like depressing sci-fi
By Hope
I'll be honest- I grew up on 90's and 00's Sci-fi shows like Andromeda, Stargate SG1, various Star Treks, and the like, so my sci-fi preference is adventures through space with hope and humor.

This book, therefore, was most decidedly NOT my cup of tea. The most prominent reason this is the case is that it combines my two least-favorite categories of science fiction: the dystopian where the future sucks and there is no hope in sight, and the political allegory that is about as subtle as a sledgehammer to the face.

If I studied the book as it was written- as Vietnam War literature or even War literature in general- I can see its importance to history, politics, and literature. (This part I could pick up on because I just studied the Vietnam War, so I could see where the author was coming from). So, as such, it probably deserves all the stars. BUT as I prefer to read fiction as escapism, I did not like feeling depressed all the way through, so I'm rating it on my personal tastes.

On the bright side, there was a glimmer of hope at the end. Yay. 2 stars for you.

The Case for Meritocracy (The Political Series Book 3), by Michael Faust

The human race is ill. One story above all reveals the sickness at the core of the human psyche... the tale of the Tree of Knowledge. What does it say about the human race that knowledge is associated with the loss of paradise, with the forbidden, with the defiance of the rightful authority (“God”), with alliance with the serpent (the Devil), and with the advent of suffering, sin, and death?! Why should we be surprised that Martin Luther, the founder of Protestantism, described reason as “the Devil’s whore”? Why was Socrates put to death by Athenian democracy? Why has no genius ever been a king, prime minister or president? Why are intellectuals held in contempt? Knowledge and reason have always been viewed by the human race as distasteful, suspect, unnatural, and likely to lead to trouble.

Of course, the smartest human beings have always taken the opposite view. It’s ignorance, faith and irrationalism that are holding back humanity. The allegory of the Ship of Fools derives from Plato, one of the world’s greatest geniuses, and describes the disaster that will befall a ship if the crew gets rid of the navigator..., i.e., if the fools, contemptuous of knowledge and expertise, put themselves in charge of steering the vessel.

Human history has been subject to three disastrous forces – three Horses of the Apocalypse, we might say. They are: 1) the power of violence (war, military strength... everything that’s sustained by brute force), 2) the power of stories (religion, monarchy... everything sustained by the beliefs people hold, by the Mythos they have chosen to explain their lives to themselves), and 3) the power of money (the universal currency for buying what you want, for getting people to do what you want because they crave the money you can give them).

Human societies have always been ruled by military elites, or Mythos elites (religious or royal), or rich elites. They have never been ruled by intellectual elites.

Humanity could be saved by knowledge, understanding, reason and logic, but these have always been despised by the average person. Plainly, none of these things plays any role in the lives of typical Muslims, Jews, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Hindus, Taoists, or consumer capitalists. They play no part in prayer, meditation and going shopping. No one in the West says you can be “saved” by maximizing your intelligence; no, you must instead maximize your irrational faith. No one in the East says that the path to Enlightenment is the one concerned with the most rational ontology and epistemology; no, you must cross your legs, close your eyes, and literally try to escape from your own mind – the exact definition of a Mindless ideology! No capitalist says that anything other than buying stuff can make you happy.

In comparison with the three Horses of the Apocalypse, intellectual attributes have never played a decisive role in human affairs. They have always served the Horses, and never controlled them. The intelligentsia have always been advisers, and never those occupying the throne and taking the decisions.

What would happen to the world if Logos people rather than Mythos people were in charge, if smart people rather than military people were in charge, if people of knowledge ruled rather than people of wealth? The world would be transformed. Humanity would undergo a wondrous metamorphosis.

A political system exists that can deliver this New World Order... a world where intelligence becomes the most valued resource. It’s called Meritocracy.

Meritocracy: The Only Hope Humanity Has Left
By Brad Gumm
I just began reading "The Case for Meritocracy", the newest book by Michael Faust, and it's already absolutely amazing. "The Case for Meritocracy" is one of a series of books written by the Pythagorean Illuminati. You can find all of the Illuminati's books on Amazon under the authors: Michael Faust, Adam Weishaupt, and Mike Hockney. The books written by the Pythagorean Illuminati are unlike any other books on this planet. In them you will discover the answers to all of humanity's most sacred and profound questions. Would you like the proof of your soul? Would you like the proof of an afterlife? Would you like to know how to create the universe? Would you like to know if goddesses and gods truly exist? Would you like to know what black holes are? You will find definitive, mathematical answers to each and every one of the above questions and many, many more when you read the books by the Pythagorean Illuminati. These books are in a class all to themselves.

"The Case for Meritocracy" is a book describing the political philosophy of the Pythagorean Illuminati. If you are looking for a Truly rational political system, then you have found it here. In fact, Pythagorean Meritocracy is beyond rational, it's Hyperrational, and it's the only hope humanity has left to save itself from extinction. What is hyperrationalism? Hyperrationalism is the philosophy that mathematics is EVERYTHING, therefore, hyperrationalism is the philosophy of ontological mathematics, which means it's the philosophy of reality.

Ontological mathematics proves to us that reality comprises ALL of mathematics, and the spacetime domain of "matter" is but one component of the vast mathematical cosmos. This means that every single number Truly exists, in fact, it means that numbers are the ONLY things that Truly exist.

Hyperrationalism is the only philosophy that acknowledges that reality is 100% mathematics. Hyperrationalism takes the profound Truth that mathematics is all, and shows exactly what this means for humanity. Hyperrationalism is the grand philosophy that shows humanity how to live in mathematical harmony with each other. It's the philosophy that shows humanity how to build a heaven on Earth that perfectly reflects the harmony of the hyperrational, ontological mathematical cosmos. This heaven on Earth begins with the hyperrational governmental system of Pythagorean Meritocracy, or simply Meritocracy.

Meritocracy, at core, is all about government that provides absolute equal opportunity for every single child on the planet to learn, thrive, and develop to the greatest extent of their individual talents and ambitions. It is government fueled and driven by the highest human values: Reason, Community, Integrity, Initiative, Excellence, and Self-Discipline. It is government with the highest visions, the highest aspirations, the highest goals, and the most profound sacred cause of bringing about an entire world where absolutely everyone enjoys equal opportunity to become the best that they can possibly be. This is the exact world depicted on the show "Star Trek", and a Pythagorean Meritocratic Republic can make this type of world a reality.

It's our choice though. The Pythagorean Illuminati have provided humanity with the blueprint of how to save ourselves, and it's called Meritocracy. It's now up to us whether or not we're going to effectuate the design. For a Meritocratic Republic to come into being, humanity, in general, must become much more rational. We must at least get to the point where we are rational enough to understand that society MUST be governed by its most intelligent/rational members. There is no other way. Up to this point, human society has been exclusively governed by psychopaths. Psychopaths have created many "political systems" but they all seem to do only one thing, namely, increase the power of psychopaths. A world governed by super powerful psychopaths is the world we see in front of our eyes every day, and it's the world that is edging closer and closer to the abyss. Only humanity's intellectual elite can save us.

When I refer to the "most intelligent/rational" and the "intellectual elite", it's important to note that I am absolutely not referring to our contemporary scientists, a.k.a. scientific materialists. Today's scientific establishment is infested with, and controlled by, the same types of irrational psychopaths who have brought the world to its knees. Scientists are the people who have created the most horrendous weapons of mass destruction to be distributed all over the world, including nuclear bombs that can END ALL LIFE ON THE PLANET. These weapons are causing unprecedented misery and environmental destruction all over the planet, and scientists have the gall to pretend to be concerned with global warming and the fate of life on this planet. What a joke. These people have no regard for life; they are the absolute enemies of life, plain and simple. Scientists are NOT the intellectual elite, no matter what the propaganda they sell us says. No, scientists are the enemies of the intellectual elite.

The intellectual elite are the most hyperrational, ontological mathematical, philosophers on the planet. It is these people who need to be in charge of the governance of society for the benefit of all. With humanity's most rational members at the helm of society, we can finally begin constructing a New World Order based on Pythagorean Illuminism and Pythagorean Meritocracy. Once this New World Order of reason is in place, humanity will be set to realize its full potential and we can at last begin to Truly LIVE.

So, you can see that if humanity wishes to enjoy a world with equal opportunity for every child, woman, and man to thrive, then, for the first time in history, humanity's most intelligent members MUST be put in charge of human society. This means that the psychopaths must be dethroned, and we all know that they won't go willingly. It's going to take a fight, but it's a fight that we can win if we walk the path of Pythagorean Illuminism.

If you're truly sick and tired of all the irrationality, stupidity, and insanity that is omnipresent on this planet, then you need to read the books written by Michael Faust, Mike Hockney, and Adam Weishaupt, a.k.a. the Pythagorean Illuminati, as soon as possible. These books will teach you everything you ever wanted to know about the religion of Pythagorean Illuminsm, the philosophy of Hyperrationalism, the political system of Meritocracy, and the discipline of Ontological Mathematics.

Once you begin reading the books by the Pythagorean Illuminati, you will begin to feel the urge to change the world for the betterment of all. As soon as you feel this urge, begin to take action. Think about what you can do to help spread the word of Pythagorean Illuminism, Pythagorean Meritocracy, Hyperrationalism, and Ontological Mathematics. The main thing is to just get active about spreading the message, many more people must discover these books before humanity will be able to change, and I fear we're running short on time.

If you are serious, and would like to learn even more about Pythagorean Illuminism and begin to work with other like minded Pythagorean Meritocrats, then you should check out the ONLY official websites of the Pythagorean Illuminati: meritocracyparty.org, and pythagoreanilluminati.com. Each of these sites have corresponding Facebook pages that are also packed with information.

So, the bottom line is that this planet is running out of time. Death loving lunatics are everywhere. Sooner or later they're going to kill the planet and everything on it unless we choose to fight back. To properly and effectively fight back we need a plan, a blueprint that all rational people can agree upon and begin to implement in a systematic manner. As I said above, the Pythagorean Illuminati have provided us with that plan, and it's called Meritocracy.

Now is the time for the greatest struggle in human history, the struggle between reason and unreason, to finally come to an end. The final battle is looming and you must choose sides. Will you assist the life hating psychopaths in their destruction of the planet by choosing to be passive in the face of their brutality. Or will you stand up, become the heroine/hero you were born to be, and join with the life affirming, ontological mathematicians of the Pythagorean Illuminati in their struggle to bring about a New World Order of equal opportunity for all.

I know my choice, I stand with Pythagoras and the secret society he created: The Pythagorean Illuminati.

excellent book on Plato's system in the best contemporary political series
By David Melik
This is the best (along with his others and those of the two associated writers) introductory modern series on rationalist idealism in Classical Greek & Cartesian & German Idealist philosophy & postmodernism, including Pythagoreanism/Illumination, Platonism, Hermetism, Gnosticism, Leibnizianism, Hegelianism, formal & natural & social science, religion, and the arts, in this case on sociology & psychology & politics & economics, Platonic society, mathematics, etc.

By Paweł Bartłomiej Kowalski
The general impression I have had reading this book is that it was written by a 17-year-old who received a good grade on his Philosophy essay and decided to extend it into a full-length book. The style is very demagogic (reads more like a speech than written work). A lot of claims are made and they are rarely backed by evidence.
The author recalls the Dunning-Kruger effect and seems to be unable to apply it to themselves. The general impression that I have is that the author(s) decided to blend "mainstream" Western philosophy with the works of the likes of Aleister Crowley and understood neither.

The Finn Factor, by Rachel Bailey

A new adult romance from Entangled's Embrace imprint...

Sometimes all a girl needs is a little practice...

It's been twelve months, three days, and eleven hours since accounting student Scarlett Logan made it past a second date. A pitcher of mojitos in hand, she employs her supreme graphing skills to narrow things down to one horrifying explanation. Kissing. Clearly someone needs to teach her how to kiss properly. Like, say, her best friend and roomie, Finn Mackenzie. He's safe, he's convenient, and yeah, maybe just a little gorgeous.

Finn knows exactly why Scarlett's boyfriends are disappearing quickly. Him. Not a single guy she's brought home is nearly good enough. And he'll be damned if he lets some loser give her "kissing lessons." No. He'll do the honors, thank you very much. The moment their lips touch, though, everything turns upside down. But Scarlett deserves the one thing Finn can't give her. And if he doesn't put an end to the sexy little shenanigans, he'll teach Scarlett the hardest lesson of all...heartbreak.

... really wanted to read The Finn Factor because I love this kind of plot
By Jen S
I really wanted to read The Finn Factor because I love this kind of plot. Friends becoming romantically involved. I loved The Finn Factor even more because it felt different than other ones I have read. It had a little bit more unique feel.

The thing that I thought is unique about The Finn Factor is the fact that Scarlett and Finn are best friends and have been for four years. Neither of them has been lusting after the other. They have had a solid friendship and both have dated many other people. That’s not to say that subconsciously they fell for eachother early on but neither of them knew that. So you don’t have that pining from one character to the other. It made me really like the book. When they have the “kissing lesson” it’s almost like unlocking a Pandora’s box for them. I like how things play out from that point on.

Finn and Scarlet both have issues but the issues are not too heavy. It allows you to keep interest in the book by creating drama for the plot but also let’s you really enjoy the romance.

Family is a really strong element of the book, which is also something that I really like to see. We have Scarlett who have parents, that might be a little on the eccentric end but really do love their kids. Then there is Finn who is the caretaker for his sisters, which let’s you see a different side of him. Which also brings in some great side characters.

I loved both Scarlet and Finn. Fin definitely has that adorable nerd thing going for him and Scarlet is the artist one who can rock glasses.

I loved The Finn Factor and the fact that it has romance but not to heavy on the issues. It’s a great read for when you just need a break and want something fun to make you smile.

Fun and flirty!
By DianthaJ
What a fun and flirty read! I didn't really know if this book would keep my interest but it intrigued me enough to give it a try. Glad I did! Besides being hilarious (always a plus) it was cute and very sexy and you can't go wrong with that.

Scarlett is the type of MC I love in romance books. She's not pathetic in any way, only adorably innocent when it comes to Finn and her feelings for him. Both of them are actually. I loved how there was this life-changing friendship between Scarlett and Finn for many years before hooking up. I think it made for a more realistic read because they dated other people (and not out of spite) and actually tried to be friends. They became important to each other on a different level before becoming lovers and that's awesome. It means there is a solid foundation for their relationship and it only makes sense when they take the next step. The only two that were surprised were Scarlett and Finn.

I thought Finn was adorably funny and sweet. I loved his personality and especially how he was with his two younger sisters. Their relationship was really cute and he was a great big brother. I didn't really like the whole Finn's-parents-are-dead aspect of the story. For some reason I always feel like the author is trying to add unnecessary drama or on the flipside, eliminate a complication from the plot if both parents are dead. But then there are Scarlett's parents who are hilariously hippie and then I think that I'm wrong. They were a riot, especially Scarlett's mother. I about died during the dreaded "sex talk". You will know what I'm talking about when you read the book. It was freaking hilarious.

This book wasn't erotic really, but it was pretty sexy. There are a couple of sex scenes, but nothing that should make you blush like a virgin unless you are one. I thought they were well-written, like the entire book, and pretty steamy. Always a good thing.

This was a quick read with all the elements that I like in a NA romance. Relatable characters, humor, passion and friendship. I definitely recommend it and look forward to more books from this author.

Book Crazy Lady Review
By Courtney Gaston
**I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.**

Scarlett Logan has herself in a dry spell so she maps out her dates to find out what is wrong. At first she believes it is her kissing because they never come back after the kiss and she almost never makes it past the first date. Little does she know that it is actually her sexy roommate Finn. She wanted kissing lessons and Finn is right there to step in and offer. It wasn’t supposed to be more than one little kiss, but that kiss changed everything. Both Finn and Scarlett tried to get the one little kiss out of their mind but that wasn’t happening since no one else compared to the other person.

This wasn’t my favorite book by a long shot, but it also wasn’t horrible. I believe the reasoning behind me not liking it so much is because how many women have a sexy straight male roommate where they have no idea they liked one another? The only sexy man I would ever live with if I was single would be my gay best friend not some guy I wanted to bang every two seconds. Another thing that bothered me is that the both of them “didn’t realize” they liked one another more than friends. Really… Finn’s little sister, Amelia, needed to point that out to the both of them? Maybe they really were both just clueless, but I am the type of person that would question everything Finn does. Scarlett is the only other person Finn has ever opened up to besides his two sisters so why would she think nothing of that?

Other than that, I enjoyed the book. The writing was good and I was into the book. Just not crazy over the story line. I would like to read another book in the future by Rachel Bailey, but I really do hope that I like the story line is a little better than this one.
