Not helpful for the urban traveler

I purchased the LP Barcelona guide to help with a five night trip. We certainly wanted help getting around to the major sites, but I selected this book over some of the other guides knowing we'd be in an iconic city known for it's great food and night-life and trusting LP's reputation as catering to a more hip audience looking for something more than just a tourist experience.

The dining and nightlife recommendations were pretty awful. We stayed in El Born so we'd hoped to get some recommendations for some more local/authentic spots there as well as the still a bit seedy but quite hip El Raval. Too many of the restaurant recommendations are for the super upscale/touristy L'Eixample and touristy places by the beach. We found Yelp to be a much better guide for places to eat and drink than this book.

Given that: once you're not getting any useful info to eat/drink the rest of the book falls short as a regular tour guide to the main attractions. Prior to Barcelona we had spent a few days in Provence France and used Rick Steve's guide there. His guide is full of helpful tips (go on this walking route for a nice experience, make sure you get to this place early, here's a way to skip the lines). The LP Barcelona Books doesn't give this type of help. Not even something as simple as informing you to getting your tickets online on your smartphone for Sagrada Familia will save you having to wait an hour in line. Another example is it has a chapter dedicated to an excursion to Parc Guell (famous Gaudi park) and Camp Nou (FC Barcelona stadium). These two places are on complete opposite sides of the city. It doesn't make sense to group these things that are a two hour walk apart unless you're going to provide some suggestions on how to get between the two by the Metro or such. It's just not helpful to plan your day in a useful organized way.

I can't recommend a better Barcelona guide as this was the only one I purchased, but had I to do it over I'd certainly have gone with Rick Steve's.

A great "gift" for your supervisors and managers!

Everyone can benefit from improved leadership skills, but it's sometimes difficult to take criticism constructively. This book provides managers with a lot of food for thought, broken down into managable lists. If your managers need a little help improving their leadership skills, buy them a copy of this book. I keep a copy of the book on my desk and re-read one list each day. When conducting Leadership Seminars, I have used some of the lists to initiate group discussions.

Just buy it and put it inside your drawer!

As a middle manager in big conglomerates for a decade (that means I failed to climb to the top), I strongly recommend you to buy the book and put it inside your drawer and not on your table if you want to have some competitive advantages after all. Without exaggeration, the book contains short but highly useful tips or checklists for over 95% of business engagements/tasks I can think of. Some reviewers criticized that the content is mostly common sense stuff. In my experience, the devil is in the details. It's efficient and "safe" to get a quick review of the important points for, say, budget discussion with your boss, interviewing a redundant staff, writing a complaint against your vendor, apologising to an angry customer and so on.

In a word, a must buy, unless you are confident enough to think that you are always on your top shape with perfect bullets and armors, for all situations and every single minute in a business day.

Must book for anyone living in a dynamic environment

The guy who recommended this book said he wished he'd had it 20 years earlier in his career. I think he was right. This book is loaded with lists and list of things that you should think about in some situation. Someone has taken the time to itemize the things you should consider in dozens of different situations. Want to improve you customer realations. Take at look at that list and you'll find a lot of things that really make sense. These lists save you the time of trying to figure out what are the attributes if a given situation that you should be looking at. Great book for anyone. You won't use it every day but when you need it, one application of the list can repay you the price of the book many times over.

Miyamoto Musashi (1584 - 1645) was arguably the greatest swordsman who ever lived, a legendary figure whose methods of thought and strategy have been studied and adopted across a wide spectrum of society, from martial artists to military leaders to captains of industry. About the Author
Br. Kris Wilder, OSF is a member of The Order of St. Francis, one of many active Apostolic Christian Orders. A National Representative for the University of New Mexico's Institute of Traditional Martial Arts, he has earned black belts in three styles and teaches martial arts seminars world-wide.

Alain Burrese, J.D. is a former US Army sniper instructor who taught at the 2nd Infantry Division Scout Sniper School at Camp Casey, South Korea. He is also an attorney, speaker, and personal security, safety and self-defense instructor who has earned a 5th degree black belt in Hapkido.

Wallace Smedley is an educator who has worked for Chuck Norris' KICKSTART KIDS Foundation since 2002, and helped develop their Character Education Values Curriculum. Teaching karate in the public school system, he has helped thousands of kids build character and enhance their self-esteem.

Lisa Christensen has worked as a Workers' Comp Claims Examiner for over 30 years. An insurance executive, she is certified to adjudicate claims in Oregon and retains an Oregon General Lines Adjuster License. She has earned black belts in taekwondo and American Freestyle Karate.

Lawrence Kane, COP-GOV is a Certified Outsourcing Professional in Governance and a senior leader at a Fortune� 50 corporation where, among other things, he is responsible for the strategy for a $1.1B per year organization. He has been studying and teaching martial arts since 1970.

Dan Anderson, who wrote the foreword, is a retired karate tournament champion who was rated in the national top 10 ratings four years in a row. Founder of the MA80 System of Arnis/Eskrima, he received the Gat Andres Bonafacio award from the Philippine Classical Arnis society in 2008. A 9th dan black belt, he has authored 20 books on karate and Filipino Martial Arts as well as produced 25 DVDs on the subjects.

Excellent

As their usual, Kane and Wilder have produced a wonderful book, this one on the genius or crazy man (pick either one and you're right), swordsman's extraordinary, Musashi.

There are many books written on the master but this one is unique in that 5 writers from very different backgrounds discuss what each of Musashi's 21 precepts mean to them in their lives during these modern times. Are there things to learn from their interpretations of precepts written in the 1600s before there were cell phones, Internet, and Facebook? Absolutely.

Each writer offers powerful insight to help the reader view these precepts differently than what appears at first blush and, in so doing, apply some, probably not all, to their own lives.

Psychopath? Really?

Very annoying that Musashi is continually referred to as a psychopath. Was he? Perhaps, since every samurai n Japan was trying to emulate the type of warrior Musashi was, were they a country of psychopaths? I doubt it. And if being totally focused on violently ending an enemy, would the authors conclude that every American combat veteran is also a psychopath?

It almost seems as though the authors are trying to distance themselves from the subject of the book, embarrassed to be talking about him.

I would not for a moment deny Musashi's violence and the violence of the culture he lived in, or try to glorify that violence, but I am not sure that we can look back across time and judge people according to modern standards.

A Must Buy

This book is unique in that it doesn't fit the mold of a Y2K book on Myamoto Mushashi, arguably Japan's most skilled swordsman. Known as a "kensei"/"sword saint" his knowledge found in is most famous work Go Rin No Sho (The Book of Five Rings) and is the most disseminated work of his combat tactics and strategies. Far less known is his philosophy on life. Dokkodo. Dokkodo is not only translated but it is viewed from five different perspectives: a monk, a warrior, a teacher, a businessman, and an insurance executive. No longer will Musashi's work be only viewed from a martial arts context but from all walks of life. This makes it a very unique book and is a keeper.

About the Author
SERGIO FRANCO is a professor of Electrical Engineering at San Francisco State University. He was born in Friuli, Italy,and earned his Ph.D from the university of Illinois at Urbana-champaign. Prior to becoming professor, Dr. Franco had extensive industrial experience and has worked and publised in such diverse areas as solid state phycsis,pattern reconition, electronic music, IC design,and medical, consumer and automotive electronics. Dr. Franco is also the author of the textbook Electric Circuit Fundamentals, Oxford University Press, 1995. In addition to teaching, Dr. Franco consults for industry.

Highly recommended, covers a lot of material, both intuitive and mathematical approach.

This is one of the best books Ive read on analog circuit design, and I've read quite a few. I must say it is not as rigurous or complete as say Microelectronic Circuits by Sedra/Smith or Analysis and Design of Analog Integrated Circuits by Gray, Hurst, Lewis, Meyer, however the material covered in this book is quite useful and the author's approach to problem solving using a combination of intuition and math is extremely valuable.

At first I was reluctant on buying this book given the fact that I already own and read some of the well known standard books I just mentioned, however now that I have read it, I can say that this book was a wonderful addition to my library, it offers a very different perspective from the rest of the books I own, Dr. Franco has this effect, in fact that was the main reason I bought it since I already read some of Dr. Franco's other books.

If you have already read Dr. Franco's wonderful book Design With Operational Amplifiers and Analog Integrated Circuits you may already be familiar with his writting style, which is highly pedagogical and enjoyable, however, what I have always disliked is the fact that some derivations and formulae are presented in quite an unconventional way when compared to rest of the books out there, some formulas are extended considerably more than needed or factored in odd ways, im sure that computation wise Dr. Franco's formulas may be more efficient,but it is a lot harder to remember them or work with them in a day to day basis.

The mandatory sections on BJT, Mosfets, and configurations for both discrete and integrated (Darlington, Cascode, LTP, etc..) design are very well written, with lots of examples and a lot of indepth material.

The chapter on negative feedback is brilliant, yet only the simplest forms are presented, the stabilizing techniques or frequency compensation techniques section of the book need more depth, compensation techniques are basically presented but barely covered, same thing happens with the output stages of amplifiers (Class A, AB, B, etc...) which in my opinion needed a bit more detail.

This is the first edition of this book, so one can only assume that future editions will add more material , as well as corrections to the ocassional typo here and there. This book really deserves a lot more credit, and the unfounded 1 star bad review written here on amazon should be deleted, the book however is quite expensive but it is very well worth it, the paper and construction of the book is really solid, I highly recommend it.

Disclaimer: I was a student of his.

I took his class in the past and we used the rough draft of what was to become this book. He was one of the toughest teachers I've ever had but he made us learn. If you really want to learn and understand this subject, then get this book.
