Unforgettable

Ruby Bradley's story shows how brave the Army and Navy nurses were during imprisonment in the Phillipines. When she joined the Army Nurse Corps before WWII, never did she imagine the frightful experience the next few years would bring. Ruby and Beatrice Chambers were the only Army nurses stationed at Camp John Hay, the mountain base where the Japanese bombs first hit before bombing the bases at Manila. The small medical staff spent the next days constantly caring for the wounded being brought in to the Army hospital. When the enemy troops neared the nurses left with a small group to escape to the hillside. Eventually they were captured along with civilians in Baguio. For the next three years the nurses continued to care for those who suffered starvation and illnesses under a brutal enemy.

After being rescued, returning to the States, and resuming her Army nursing, Ruby Bradley volunteered for another war, Korea, and began the next exciting experience in her career. Read the book to find out what a remarkabe woman she was.

I came to love Colonel Bradley as I was completing this book

I read this book in less than two days. Being a nurse for 26 years, along with being in the Navy for three years (non-nursing) , I came to love Colonel Bradley as I was completing this book. Colonel Bradley seemed to be firm, but fair, serious, but had a witty sense of humor. As to her wounded patients (solders), whether they were black or white,she was like a mother and big sister to these guys, telling them it's going to be okay! It appeared while reading this book that the junior nurses, her corpsmen, and the doctors/surgeons with whom she worked along side with, Colonel Bradley was highly praised and respected! Very Good book . I enjoyed reading every page of this book.

One of the best books that I have ever read on investment theory.

One of the best books that I have ever read on investment theory as a nonprofessional. It elaborates his ideas far more clearly than Asia's Gold. I think the technical aspects and specifics in Asia's Gold should be understood in the context of the theories presented in book.

Riding the Millennial Storm is a really good supplement for amateur investors that are just starting to learn about the markets. They are not comfortable with the approaches from Peter Lynch and William O'neil, have understood the concept of value investing and prices, length of movements, and momentum, but does not have the ability or the resources to track indicators like the professionals.

Among the most interesting and useful parts of the book are his explanations on the dangers of contrarian investing and not every poor performing stock is a winner the next year or two around. His thoughts on real estate and agriculture prices across periods of history are cute and shows the need to recognize supply and demand as well as the vigilance needed to always pay attention to technological innovation and new emerging sources of supply that can swallow demand (rubber, sugar, etc).

The parts on the stages of a market: optimism, panic, and liquidation are interesting.

There isn't any specific strategy or indicators that the book advocates, but I felt it gave me a great deal of ideas and a solid knowledge source of foundation for future investing. In my humble opinion, the danger in investing lies in taking the wrong lessons after failure and this book has very little fluff.

I would recommend this book with Martin J Whitman and Benjamin Graham's Security Analysis as well as Victor Sperandeo's second book on length and momentum of stock markets.

This is a excellen book and well worth reading. It does an excellent job of describing Marc Faber thinking way, which is an incredibly interesting for thos who can put it in biger context. I actually fund this book much more interesting then "Tomorrow's Gold". Must read!

About the Author
Conrad Phillip Kottak (A.B. Columbia, 1963; Ph.D. Columbia, 1966) is Professor and Chair of Anthropology at the University of Michigan, where he has taught since 1968. �In 1991 he was honored for his teaching by the University and the state of Michigan. �In 1992 he received an excellence in teaching award from the College of Literature, Sciences, and the Arts of the University of Michigan. �Professor Kottak has done fieldwork in cultural anthropology in Brazil (since 1962), Madagascar (since 1966), and the United States. In current research projects, Kottak and his colleagues have investigated the emergence of ecological awareness in Brazil, the social context of deforestation in Madagascar, and popular participation in economic development planning in northeastern Brazil.

This is TRULY a Concise Intro to Anthro!

This is without a doubt the MOST CONCISE introductory anthropology textbook I have ever seen. That, in itself, makes it worthy of four stars. It would have gotten five stars if it had been better edited because there is STILL a lot of excess verbiage in this book. Dr. Kottak is an interesting fellow, and his research sounds like it has contributed some very important anthropological findings to the field, BUT he has a habit of throwing it bits of information about his work where the info is neither relevant nor helpful. Also, some of the most important concepts are given short shrift while the most minimally important topics are given PAGES. It can make sorting the relative importance of topics rather difficult, not to mention the problems of understanding the important topics that have been glossed over in 2-3 sentences as if everyone should already know them. That said, the book is easy to read, and I LOVE that I could rent it at such a reasonable cost.

In a highly stimulating, unorthodox inquiry that cuts across many disciplines, experimental psychologist Humphrey argues that raw sensation, not thought, is the central fact of consciousness. Furthermore, he claims, mental activities other than the five senses enter consciousness only when accompanied by "reminders" of sensation, as with mental imagery. Humphrey ( Consciousness Regained ) posits two separate channels of the mind--one for sensation or subjective feelings, another for perception or objective knowledge of the external world. These two channels are said to employ very different styles of information processing: "analog" processing of sensations leads to pictorial images, while "digital" processing of perception yields propositions. Lightening his often technical discussion with thought experiments, drawings and illustrative examples from authors ranging from Lewis Carroll to Aldous Huxley, Humphrey sketches an evolutionary history of the mind, from ameboid wriggles in the primeval soup onward. Conscious feeling, he stresses, is a form of intentional doing, creating the thick moment of the subjective present.

An Interesting Attempt to Explain Consciousness

Surely the phenomena of consciousness is one of the most intractable problems in the universe. Legions of very bright people have taken a stab at the problem, to little or no avail. Sadly, I am unable to resist the temptation to read yet another discussion on the subject, even though I know I will come away frustrated.
My reservations notwithstanding, this book turned out to contain some genuinely interesting, as well as sensible, thinking on the operation of the human brain. His theory is well grounded in common sense, and is developed carefully. Humphrey's approach is a good one: How might the human brain have evolved to create consciousness from primitive antecedents?
Central to Hamphrey's theory is the distinction between sensation and perception, that is to say the difference between the subjective sensations that we experience versus the awareness of some external object. This argument takes a considerable length of time for Humphrey to unpack, and there were moments where I doubted that the distinction was worth the care that Humphrey lavished upon it. However, at the end of the day, it is worth wading through this discussion in order to fully understand this key element of Humphrey's idea.
The critical leap occurs when Humphrey postulate the existence of "reverbatory feedback loops." Under this theory, consciousness arises when sensory information is shuttled between the nervous system and the brain repeatedly. This mechanism would give temporal continuity to sensation and might well be the foundation for consciousness.
Whether or not you buy this theory, you will be interested to follow Humphrey through the steps that allow him to get to the conclusion. There are numerous simple examples drawn from a broad range of disciplines, that will give you insight into the human brain, even if you resist the final conclusion. However, once you see the theory in its final form, it is pretty beguiling. In fact, Humphrey actually concludes with a discussion of whether the theory is "too simple."
If this is an area that appeals to you at all, this is a book worth reading!

Excellent Craftsmanship

As stated by others here this book is an easy read, done in one or two sittings (if your interested in the topic you'll consume it quickly)... That is perhaps the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars: I would have enjoyed another 100 pages that could have expanded some of his explanations and illustrations... That, however, is the only flaw...

Other reviews have noted that his theory is flawed because it falls into the Cartesian Theater mode (ref. Daniel Dennet) - at this I can only scratch my head and wonder if they read the same book that I did. Others have mentioned that this book is "speculation" and has no 'scientific' basis (I believe in neuroscience and so forth)... Again I must only puzzle at these statements: science can indeed show us the quantitative "facts" about brain hardware but the experience of being conscious won't be found under the microscope and that is the core of this book...

Perhaps reading the book with a certain predisposition creates these misinterpretations? Which, oddly enough, Humphrey mentions in this work. From within each discipline studying consciousness a tendency to favor one's own ideas emerges - it's a fact of humanity.

All that being said this book represents only a partial theory - a journey through areas that are still unknown... But it provides (if not a map) at least a partially functioning compass! Enjoy with an open mind...

I liked the evolutionary focus, especially the proposed theory on how perception/sensation diferentiations evolved. But it is implicitly assumed that consciousness=sensation, and I doubt this is the case. Also, considering the purposes of the book, there is not much neurology. It would be nice if the author could go all the way and propose clearer neurological correlates for sensation, in hte sense described in the book. However, seen in present consciousness studies context, this is a highly valuable volume, that certianly could become a classic. Great prose.
There is a reviewer who mentions Dennett, and I would like to say something in Humphrey's behalf. First, it is not evident that Dennett has it right (see Crick and Kotch's paper 'the unconscious homonucolus" for a possibility). Second, I do not see what reading of Humphrey's would show a cartesian theather fallacy in his model.(Humphrey is close, and has collaborated with, Dennett. I would think he is aware of his work). Whithout spoiling it, consciousness for Humphrey (or qualia) are "as-if" bodily activity loops in the brain. There is no place where it all "comes together", and the activity is refered back to itself, so does not need to be read out by a homonuculus. Humphrey's free from the cartesian theather.

Chapter Review Question Problems

I just purchased this textbook for my Psychiatry Seminar class. I absolutely love the way the book is written. It is so accessible and the examples are very demonstrative. However, I am having one major issue with the book... The answers listed on the Evolve website for many of the answers are not correct. It will be a WHICH ONE of these is correct answer, and three letters will be listed. Additionally, unlike the first edition of the book, there are no rationales for the answers. For me this is a very big problem since I want example problems to help me study for the exam.

About the Author

Jerry H. Bentley was professor of history at the University of Hawai`i and editor of the Journal of World History. He wrote extensively on the cultural history of early modern Europe and on cross-cultural interactions in world history, including Humanists and Holy Writ: New Testament Scholarship in the Renaissance (1983), and Politics and Culture in Renaissance Naples (1987), and in later years, concentrated on global history and particularly on processes of cross-cultural interaction, resulting in Old World Encounters: Cross-Cultural Contacts and Exchanges in Pre-Modern Times (1993) and Shapes of World History in Twentieth-Century Scholarship (1996). He passed away in 2012.

Who says sequels cannot be better than the original?

Kahuna Kevin did it again! His latest tome of mixological creations provides the world with 52 NEW "Tiki-Licious" Cocktails for our drinking pleasure. His book is 56 pages of spiral bound liquid resistance madness. Like the first book you will need a well stocked bar with juices, bitters, and garnish if you want to experience the flavors he created.
Each of Kevin's creations is complex and may take a little searching in your area to find a comparable ingredient. Unlike the first volume where Kevin gave very precise ingredients, his second volume we find the general ingredient and in parenthesis the brand he prefers. They are a few items due to their very nature he asks not be substituted (such as bitters) and I wholeheartedly respect his recommendation. As he aptly states" I've already wasted a ton of rum making both volumes... Don't waste your own stash!"

I personally enjoyed how he let his movie influences title drinks such as Buckaroo Banzai and the Sarlaac. It makes you wonder what your taste buds are in for. Personally that is why I enjoy both his cocktail books; as you flip through the pages, read the ingredients and comments he makes you curious. He moves you out of your comfort zone of usual cocktails and encourages you to experiment and try something new. I know I added several juices, bitters, and liquors to my repertoire because of his influence.

In closing I would warn that this book is not for the novice cocktail mixer or drinker. Some of the drinks are challenging and you will need to be comfortable around a full set of bar tools to make them work. The good news is Kevin gives clear step by step directions and can guide you through the cocktail creation. If you want a cocktail book that might stimulate some personal creativity and take your crafting skills to a new level this is the book for you!

I have literally dozens and dozens of cocktail books. Most of them only turn out to be good enough for a single recipe, maybe two. But Kahuna Kevin scores big with his second book. This is a collection of some truly great rum drinks, some very complex and some a little easier for the novice. One of the best things about this collection is that it challenges you to add new mixers, bitters, rums and such to your bar. And, I have found that many ingredients I discovered in this book have inspired me to try to mixology of my own.

This book has it all: great illustrations, spiral bound for easy use at the bar, nearly water proof (or rum proof) and Kahuna Kevin is cool about answering questions via social networking. Have a problem or can't find something, just ask him for help.

You won't be sorry when you grab this one.

Outstanding!!!!

Not only is this book informative and easy to use, but it's also fun! Of course, the recipes are top notch--I've come to expect nothing less from Kahuna Kevin--but what really makes this book a hoot is the accompanying descriptions, illustrations and drink titles. A few of the drink names: Blue Merkin, Drunkenstein (and Drunkenstein's Bride), and the Noggin Floggin'.

As for the recipes, my personal favorite (so far) is the Macamania. Nuanced and delicious, this drink will knock you on your butt--and taste great doing it. The highly refreshing Mintiki is another standout, a perfect balance of mint, citrus and blueberry. If you're a little more adventurous, the Bitter Old Chum will certainly shake up your palate.

If you're sick of the same old, same old, don't wait another second to order this gem!
