Virtual Life

Like others in Pearson's trilogy on Life, this is a hard book to get through, but very rewarding. This volume is on Bergson and Deleuze, and is not for the novice. The reader should have read some Bergson and Deleuze, and more or less "got the idea" behind their projects. Pearson's book is broken up into a series of essays, but they are cunningly dovetailed together. It took me awhile to get the rhythm of his exposition down, but after that it was simply hard going, and not willfully obscure. The only chapter I was unable to get through was the final chapter on the being of memory -- at this point, either my brain or Pearson's usual clarity became exhausted. The earlier chapters, however, are very valuable expositions of Bergsonian thought.

The connection between the subjects are good."

"This is a very comprehensive textbook. The real strength of the book is Part Three on indeterminate structures and Chapter 10 on symmetry/antisymmetry which is often missing in other texts. Reading the book, one gets the sense that the author has much practical experience in structural analysis and design."

About the Author
Aslam Kassimali is Professor of Civil Engineering at Southern Illinois University. He teaches structural engineering, nonlinear structural analysis, and structural dynamics and stability. Consistently recognized for teaching excellence, Dr. Kassimali has received 19 awards for outstanding teaching at the department and the college level since joining Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 1980. In 1996 he was named the Outstanding Teacher of the entire university, and in 2004 he was awarded the title of Distinguished Teacher. Professor Kassimali completed undergraduate work at the University of Karachi in Pakistan in 1969, earned a master's degree from Iowa State University in 1971, and masters and doctoral degrees from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1974 and 1976 respectively.

Oprah isn't the enemy

This is a scholarly history of what Harold Bloom, called "the American Religion," that is, the tradition of individual spiritual seeking which has a major source in Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, James--you know, the usual suspects. It's a useful counter-balance to the line from major thinkers like Robert Bellah (whom I admire enormously) that Americans under-value tradition, community, self-control, and discipline. As Schmidt points out, things are more complicated than that. There's a passion in this book, and Schmidt has his own point of view that comes through strongly without becoming overbearing (in my view). If you have a scholarly bent and are interested in spirituality, religion, or politics, you'll find this book stimulating even if you don't agree with it.

From the author's preface: "This third book of the Essene Gospel of Peace is a collection of texts of great spiritual, literary, philosophical and poetical value, created by two powerful, interwoven streams of tradition. Chronologically, the first is the stream of traditions to which the Hebrew people were exposed in the Babylonian prison, dating from the Gilgamesh Epics to the Zend Avesta of Zarathustra. The second is the stream of traditions flowing with poetical majesty through the Old and New Testaments, dating from the ageless Enoch and the other Patriarchs, through the Prophets and on to the mysterious Essene Brotherhood. In the buried library of the Essene Brotherhood at the Dead Sea, where the greatest number of scrolls were found, the texts of these two streams of traditions were very much interwoven. About the Author
Don Hallett obtained his B.Sc degree in geology from Durham University and his doctorate from University College London. He worked for Esso Exploration Inc. in UK, Morocco and Senegal, and as Area Exploration Manager for Sonatrach in Algeria. He then worked for BNOC on North Sea exploration and was Chief Geologist of its privatised successor Britoil. Dr Hallett then joined Sirte Oil Company and spent ten years in Libya, reaching the position of Exploration Superintendent. Since 1999 he has worked as a consultant, advising companies and conducting workshops in several countries, and producing the first edition of Petroleum Geology of Libya in 2002. In 2005 he became an associate of Nubian Consulting Ltd providing clients with evaluations and advice on Libyan opportunities. He was also joint author of a report on Libyan oil and gas reserves and an atlas of Libyan oil and gas fields.

Happily ever after... With a kink

Wow....... Definitely not something I'm used to reading from this author by damn glad I did!! While I get that some people may not be approving of such a lifestyle, I'll admit that it was an eye opener!! Even being fiction, I feel like people could actually learn from this. Let's not forget though..... There... Is.... Hot.... Sex..... Expertly written in my opinion! This is actually a hard review to write because I really can't give any spoilers!! So, that being said, I can relate to what Katrina was feeling in this book. Which in my opinion makes this book my top read. I felt connected to her as a reader and I'm certain other readers will feel the same. But, I also felt the same with Justin. Working to the bone and having what HE perceives as a slightly unappreciative wife. But, I felt his annoyance. I'm loving that this book took the turn I didn't expect it to. It's a story of fulfillment and doing whatever is necessary to ensure a happy marriage! Kudos to the author.... You've successfully hooked me !

The inside life of swingers...yeah buddy!!

WOW...

First swinger read for me. We all wonder what a swinger life is like. How does it work? What kind of rules do the couples have?

Katrina and Justin were in the brink of separation. Their new neighbors saved them from that. I personally wonder how a swinger marriage is like. How do they not consider it cheating? What kind of rules do they come up with?

Just like a BDSM, swingers are every where they just don't advertise it.

Justin an ARMY soldier works long hours, he's tired, he works long hours. Sex is the last thing on his mind when he gets home.
Katrina a housewife, all she wants is her husband's attention, to feel loved, wanted. I mean all us military wives feel that way. I totally get how she feels.

All they needed to do was think outside of the box. A little hesitant at first, however seeing each other with another person is how they connected again.

In the beginning I wanted to throat punch Justin. I get he he works hard. All he wants to do is come home, eat and relax. However when your spouse needs your support you should be there, not at work.

I was happy to see that both Katrina and Justin agreed to try to be swingers. I think it might benefit them.

I can't wait to see how this plays out for them.

A Quick HOT Read!!!

Levels, Levels, Levels wow there are a LOT of Levels to this story and I LOVED each and every one of them. Once I started reading this book I just couldn't put it down. Jaime has a way with her writing that draws you right in from the very first page and Levels was no different than any other of Jaime's books.

Katrina is a normal housewife who is married to Justin. Justin is working through SOCM courses. While completing this courses he has been neglecting his family mainly his wife. After Katrina received some life changing news she realizes that things with Justin needs to change or their marriage may end in divorce.

Will Katrina and Justin's new flirty neighbors Klaus and Hayley be able to help save them save their marriage? My lips are sealed.

I know that there is a DISCLAIMER placed on this series but please don't let that stop you from reading. I was a little leery but it turned out to not an issue at all.

Expert consultant advice for school systems

This book was the product of a contract awarded to Bolt, Beranek and Newman, Inc by the U.S. National Institute of Education. It reviews a variety of educational programs that claim to teach intelligence, reasoning, general problem solving and learning skills, including a review of any available evidence of effectiveness. The intention was to provide expert consultant advice to school systems considering adoption of these programs. So, this book differs from the majority of available books that simply promote one particular program. I have given it four stars rather than five because the sample of programs discussed is less comprehensive than it might have been. School people might not find the particular program they are wondering about.
