Commonsense guide, appealing to a variety of ages

This book gives clear, concise descriptions of how a child or young adolescent might handle the unexpected--embarassing, frightening or even life threatening situations.
Each situation is briefly stated on a single page in large type. The next page gives clear instructions on how to get the situation under control and when to call for help. Some of the situations include: dealing with an electrical blackout, being followed by a stranger, finding an injured animal, and what to do when a friend appears to have sustained a head injury.
I showed this book to children of varying ages. It elicited interest from children as young as six and as old as high school. One bright six-year-old buried himself in the book, sounding out the hard words because the information made him feel empowered. Older children picked and chose which situations they read but liked the straightforward approach.
This book would be good for a general population of children and young adolescents. However, it would be especially helpful to children who have social skills deficits.

This was a good common sense book for kids except page 116

This book is part of our school's family peace backpack along with a video, popcorn, and info on how to get along. There is an error on page 116 of the 1990 version. It mentions that you should put petroleum jelly on ticks to make them get off you. It does not work, the tick has plenty of oxygen, it will not suffocate. It may delay a person using tweezers to get the tick off and the person could get a disease from the tick. I have not seen the 1991 version to see if this has been corrected. Thank you

Challenging a preteen's or teenager's values and social skills

As a parent always searching for the best ways to challenge my daughter and her friends, I have been pleased with the entire "What Would You Do..." series. It's not what I would characterize as a book your child would sit and read cover to cover. Instead, it's one that invites conversation by presenting it as a question at a time -- over dinner, in the car, or whenever you want to provoke thought and conversation. While not every question may appeal to your child, you may select from the many questions posed to have delightful, and sometimes meaningful, conversations about the zany and often difficult choices we make in life.

call this a text book

Each chapter on has a couple of examples with minimual calculations, diagrams are unexplained and what topics that are explained are without diagrams. There are no solutions to any problems and typos are everywhere, including formulas. They can't even get the formula for equivalent capacitance of capacitors in series correct.

I'm not sure why there are so many poor reviews of this book. I used the 2nd edition years ago and liked it - this 3rd edition continues to be very good.

It's approach is simple, clear & direct. The math is mostly algebra & trigonometry based with a bit of calculus thrown in here and there. This makes it very approachable especially if you don't have much experience with electronics. It's much clearer than Brophy ever was and more detailed than Faissler's book (Introduction to Modern Electronics).

I find many university level intro electronics books don't give enough motivation i.e. how you actually use the stuff. Electronics is, after all, an intensely PRACTICAL subject. This book throughout shows you where and how it relates to scientific applications. Chapter 7 on transducers and chapter 15 on noise are good intros to these areas in this regard.

dislikes: 30% (170/577 pages) of book is devoted to datasheets. Why I don't know. In every intro electronics course I've seen datasheets are rarely used. And just how likely is it that you'll need the ones in this book? - usually you'll need sheets for some oddball component in the lab portion of a course. These pages are a waste and should have been devoted to something else.

It would've been nice to have end-of-chapter references to more advanced works. Glossary would have been nice,too.

Thoroughly Error Ridden, Little Support

I used this book in my undergraduate career as a physics and math major. I took Electronics Instrumentation as an elective because I genuinely wanted to learn the material, but I was sorely disappointed in the text. Besides being riddled with typos and errors, I found that the book was of no use as far as giving solutions (or even answers!) to any of the problems at the ends of the chapters. Additionally, I used the lab manual that accompanies the text, and it was equally error-ridden and unsupportive. It was as though no one ever proofed the texts prior to publication. Overall I think that with some editing, added solutions, and attention to student feedback this book could be a good resource as it covers a broad range of topics, but as it stands it is lacking.

This is a nice basic overview for those who are considering going into the world of professional makeup artistry ...

Many young people consider a career as a professional makeup artist, but just what do they do and how do they do it? No, you don't have to be a professional to apply makeup, but if you want to work in the field, you have to know how to go about it. When you are a makeup artist you use your skills and "makeup as a tool to diminish flaws, enhance features, or totally transform an individual." A professional could simply be one who, apart from an amateur, is paid for his or her work, but Gina Reyna not only feels a makeup artist needs to provide "exceptional results," but also must strive for "quality, honesty, and integrity."

Reyna outlines ten essential habits that will help young makeup artists along their journey. For example, one must practice working on their own person hygiene. Simplistic, yes, but one of those critical little details necessary for establishing one's business. Show up smelling like you just worked out in a gym or wearing heavy perfume can be overwhelming to your client base. Oh, and the ability to accept criticism is also a plus.

You'll also be able to take a whirlwind tour through makeup styles such as beauty makeup: Clean beauty, basic beauty, fashion, glamour (extreme beauty), bridal/special occasion, high fashion (avant-garde, fantasy), and clean beauty. Each type of makeup is briefly discusses so you'll get an idea of the different types of makeup you might be doing or may wish to specialize in. Perhaps you'd like to work in the theater, television, or movies. You'll have to take a look at beyond beauty styles such as theatrical or special effects. You'll even get a glimpse at thing like HD technology and makeup.

This is a nice basic overview for those who are considering going into the world of professional makeup artistry. Mind you, this is not a book that tells you how to apply makeup or enhance your looks. This is a career-basics book that would be especially helpful to young people who want to explore what the career entails. You'll learn about portfolio principals, tools you'll need, how to build a kit, where you can find "great deals" on makeup (local and online, pros and cons), airbrush makeup, HD makeup technology, storage options, licensing, educational choices, exams, choosing a school, avoiding online scams, and you'll find out many other important things you'll have to know if you are considering a career as a professional makeup artist.

Once again keep in mind if you're thinking you're going to get makeup tips, you'll be sorely disappointed. One of the things I liked the most were the numerous references to online resources. This step-by-step guide is not a tome by any means, but is quite thorough and will help many people get an idea as to what a career in the field really entails. Yes, even the fact that personal hygiene is important. I liked the book and feel it would be an excellent guide, especially for young people who *think* they might just want to work in the field and begin their training with a credible organization.

good book

A very well written book. This book is sufficient enough to teach someone to read and write proofs; no professor needed. I don't understand why it's not being used more.

I also have the second edition only because the first edition started to fall apart. I feel the first edition Is better organized. Get the first edition!!!!. If your studying mathematics on your own, you should be able to go through Saunders MacLane and Garrett Birkhoff's Algebra after this. You don't need a linear algebra class. It's just going to make you dumber. I can't emphasize enough. Go buy the First edition and do every problem and then buy MacLane Algebra and go through that, which seems to be the perfect transition after this book. You will be able to handle MacLane after this.

Looks like a great textbook choice

Perhaps I shouldn't give stars yet, as I just received this book in the mail - but I certainly like the looks of it! I was shopping for a textbook to use in a Foundations / Transition to Advanced Math class that I am slated to teach next term. The target audience is undergrad math majors, mainly freshmen, who have just finished Calculus I, are concurrently taking Calculus II, and should be bridging between computational and theoretical mathematics in their sophomore and junior years. I have taught out of "A Transition to Advanced Mathematics" by Smith, Eggen and St. Andre, for a sophomore class at another institution. I liked the flow in that book (usually did the 4 core chapters on logic and proof, and sometimes parts of the other 3 chapters which sample other areas of math). But that text is quite expensive, and our student body is limited in financial resources. This book by Roberts looks every bit as good - maybe better - and is more affordable. I like the typeface, the clear writing style, the boxed definitions and examples that stand out and are easy to read, the plentiful and clearly stated exercises for practice, the historical notes, and the solutions to odd problems including full proofs. I suspect this book will turn out to be a real gem.

Great Book

Great book, great pacing. I bought it as a text book for my college piano 101 class and I'm impressed with how quickly I'm adapting my self-taught guitar skills to the piano. I also have a few classmates who play no instruments whatsoever and, because they put in daily disciplined practice, they're able to play simple pieces REALLY well (and we're only three months into learning). Highly recommended, as long as you're willing to put in the work.
