The General Managers, by John P. Kotter

In this unprecedented study of America's leading executives, John Kotter shatters the popular management notion of the effective "generalist" manager who can step into any business or division and run it. Based on his first-hand observations of fifteen top GMs from nine major companies, Kotter persuasively shows that the best manager is actually a specialist who has spent most of his or her career in one industry, learning its intricacies and establishing cooperative working relationships. Acquiring the painstaking knowledge and large, informal networks vital to being a successful manager takes years; outsiders, no matter how talented or well-trained seldom can do as well, this in-depth profile reveals. Much more than a fascinating collective portrait of the day-to-day activities of today's top executives, The General Managers provides stimulating new insights into the nature of modern management and the tactics of its most accomplished practitioners.

Review
The Washington Post ...must reading...

Carol T. Schreiber General Electric Company Kotter's landmark portrayal of general managers at work offers new insights about actual managerial performance. He documents the importance of "growing up in a business" for career development and business competence...Most important, by identifying and depicting the most effective managers in his study, he documents the value of different approaches to management. His work represents a monumental contribution to all who educate, advise, select and evaluate general managers -- and to general managers themselves.

Andrew Heiskell Former Chairman of the Board and CEO, Time, Inc. Excellent. Kotter is describing the real world of general managers rather than the theoretical portrait which rarely matches any business activity I've ever known. All business school students should read The General Managers.

Rosemary Stewart Oxford Centre for Management Studies author of Managers and Their Jobs This is a path-breaking contribution to our knowledge of the work and behavior of general managers. Most importantly John Kotter analyzes the implications of the differences as well as the similarities in the behavior of general managers he studied. He destroys the myth of the professional manager who can be successful in any organization.

The Washington Post Well-documented, powerful, thorough...valuable for aspiring managers...must reading for board members and owners of companies looking for leaders.

Effective Leadership Techniques
By Wally Bock
This is the book that started it all for Dr. John Kotter. It's still a classic.

When Dr. Kotter set out to study general managers there was at least one thing he was pretty sure he'd find. He was sure they'd be great time managers. After all, that was the great management effectiveness builder of the age.

Back then, time management was supposed to involve the careful auditing and controlling of time use. Good time managers were expected to carefully plan their days and then rigorously work their plan. But what Kotter discovered was something very different.

He discovered that effective general managers seemed more flexible than their peers. They were constantly engaging in ad-hoc, hallway meetings and using those occasions to covey their important messages.

What Kotter had stumbled upon was less a variation in good time management practice than it was an effective communications strategy. Senior managers, indeed, any managers, can only effectively communicate a few important things in the time available.

Kotters general managers knew this. So they made sure they knew what the most important messages were that they needed to get across.

They also understood that their important messages needed to be simple and repeated over and over again. They learned to seize whatever opportunities presented themselves and use them to share their key message.

Time management has come a long way since this book was written. Just compare any time management book from the 70s with David Allen's "The Art of Getting Things Done."

Communications channels have changed as well. Now there is voicemail and email. There are wireless phones, Wi-Fi hotspots, and email-enabled pagers.

If the general managers that Kotter studied were dropped into today's world, I'm sure they would face Rip-van-Winkle-like adjustments. They'd have to learn a lot about technology.

But they'd still understand that basics of good supervision, management and leadership. That's what this book is about and why it's worth reading.

An excellent field guide to general management!

THE GENERAL MANAGERS
By John Kotter (JK)

GENERAL MANAGERS IN ACTION: POLICIES & STRATEGIES
by Francis Aguilar (FA)

While re-sorting/re-organising my personal library recently, these two books happened to pop out right in front of me. I had owned & read them during the mid-eighties when I had just been promoted to General Manager. In fact, they were my constant companions - field guides to be exact - during the nine years when I had held this position with three different firms across three different industries (chemicals manufacturing in Thailand, software development in Singapore, & metals trading in Singapore with manufacturing interests in Indonesia).
Both authors were known to me as I had read John Kotter (JK)'s 'Power & Influence: Beyond Formal Authority' & Francis Aguilar (FA)'s 'Scanning the Business Environment' in earlier years.

While JK's book was more specific in terms of the vital tasks & responsibilities of a GM, particularly from a typical American landscape, FA's book was more broad-based & intellectually more stimulating with an added international flavour. Nevertheless, both books were very well-written & easy to read. Both my own copies were earlier or first editions. I am gratified to know that newer editions of both books are now available from amazon website.

JK's book was based on the author's first-hand observations of fifteen top GMs from nine major companies. He described a typical day in the life of a successful GM. On the basis of his research into the daily behavior of GMs, he identified a dozen of typical patterns, discussed their implications & concluded that it was hard to fit the GM's behavior into categories like planning, organizing, controlling, directing, or staffing.

He argued that, in order to understand the general managers' behavior it is fundamental to recognize the two fundamental challenges & dilemmas in their jobs:

1) Figuring out what to do in the light of uncertainty & information anxiety;
2) Getting things done through a diverse group of people in spite of having little control over them;

Accordingly, GMs used agenda setting & network building to tackle these two challenges. The author further discussed both these tools in detail. He also explained how GMs use their entire networking relationships to implement their agendas.

With the author's fascinating portrait of the day-to-day activities of top GMs, I was really glad that I was able to piece together some workable composite ideas for my own career accomplishments.

There was, however, only one intriguing point from JK's book. He persuasively argued that the best manager was actually a specialist who had spent most of his career in one industry, learning its intricacies & establishing cooperative working relationships.

For readers' convenience, I append below the book's table of contents:

1. INTRODUCTION
2. THE GENERAL MANAGMENT JOBS: KEYS CHALLENGES & DILEMMAS
3. THE GM: PERSONAL & BACKGROUND CHARACTERISTICS
4. THE GMS IN ACTION PART II: SIMILARITIES IN BEHAVIOUR
5. THE GMS IN ACTIONS PART I: DIFFERENCES IN BEHAVIOUR
6. SUMMARY DISCUSSIONS & IMPLICATIONS FOR INCREASING GM PERFORMANCE
APPENDIX: INTERVIEW GUIDES, QUESTIONNAIRES, RESUMES, APPRAISING GM
PERFORMANCE

As for FA's book, which was originally intended as a case-study book for advanced management courses, I was able to use it as companion reading to JK's book.

Content-wise, it had eighteen classic case studies from a variety of international businesses that illuminate the major decisions of business life & the strategies for dealing with specific situations. The author also painstakingly discussed the critical issues faced by most GMs.

From this book, I had obtained very clear perspectives on the complex issues of strategic management. The chapter on 'Formulating Strategy', in which the author touched on managing the quality of strategic thinking, was my favourite.

For readers' convenience, I append below the table of contents of the book as follows:

PART I: THE GENERAL MANAGER

1. THE GM'S JOB
2. STRATEGY & THE GM
3. FORMULATING STRATEGY
4. IMPLEMENTING STRATEGY
5. THE GM AS LEADER
6. MEETING THE GLOBAL BUSINESS CHALLENGE
7. CORPORATE FINANCE & THE GM
8. CORPORATE GOVERNANCE & THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

PART II: CASES ON GENERAL MANAGEMENT, CORPORATE STRATEGY & BUSINESS POLICY

To conclude this review, I had derived tremendous pleasure from reading both books during the mid-eighties just as they had also provided me with stimulating insights as well as practical guidance about the complexities of general management. That really made my life easier as a GM during those tough nine years.

Although the case studies may be dated in today's context, I believe the strategies & tools for general management as outlined in the two books are still highly relevant & readily applicable.

Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs, by Johann Hari

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

It is now one hundred years since drugs were first banned in the United States. On the eve of this centenary, journalist Johann Hari set off on an epic three-year, thirty-thousand-mile journey into the war on drugs. What he found is that more and more people all over the world have begun to recognize three startling truths: Drugs are not what we think they are. Addiction is not what we think it is. And the drug war has very different motives to the ones we have seen on our TV screens for so long.

In Chasing the Scream, Hari reveals his discoveries entirely through the stories of people across the world whose lives have been transformed by this war. They range from a transsexual crack dealer in Brooklyn searching for her mother, to a teenage hit-man in Mexico searching for a way out. It begins with Hari's discovery that at the birth of the drug war, Billie Holiday was stalked and killed by the man who launched this crusade--and it ends with the story of a brave doctor who has led his country to decriminalize every drug, from cannabis to crack, with remarkable results.

Chasing the Scream lays bare what we really have been chasing in our century of drug war--in our hunger for drugs, and in our attempt to destroy them. This book will challenge and change how you think about one of the most controversial--and consequential--questions of our time.

The opposite of addiction isn’t sobriety. It’s connection.
By Peter Guither
As a drug policy expert, I have to admit, I wasn’t sure how well I’d do reading this book. I have a harder time getting into non-fiction books these days — I spend most of my time reading things online, and I’ve read so much about the war on drugs that it’s hard to get excited about reading a book about it.

But less than halfway through the first chapter, I couldn’t put it down – it’s an amazing read. Johann has done something really phenomenal with this book, by combining compelling storytelling with the factual highlights of the abominable history of the war on drugs, plus an undeniable blueprint for replacing that war.

For drug policy experts like me, it’s a great read with some fascinating personal perspectives, while filling in a few historical knowledge gaps. Definitely a reading highlight.

But if you're an average politically-aware reader who doesn’t know all that much about the drug war, I think you'll find it even more valuable. Here, in one book, you get good stories with all the verified information you need to become informed on this critical issue. I plan on buying a few copies to give to friends to read.

Additionally, you'll learn through detailed analysis that much of what you think you know about addiction is wrong.

Hari starts with the biggest villain of all — Harry Anslinger — by researching through all his diaries and files stored at Penn State University. I’ve known mostly about Anslinger’s war against marijuana, and now learned a few more things about what he did to get the war on drugs started in full force in the book.

Johann Hari provides us, throughout the book, with incredible access to individual players in the drug war. For the history, in addition to Anslinger, his research provides detailed insights into:
-- Billy Holiday, a jazz singer and drug user whose paths crossed with Anslinger’s, and
-- Arnold Rothstein, who invented the modern drug gang, and was the first major figure in organized drug crime in the United States.
And as Hari moved us to the present and future, these personal stories came from actual extensive interviews with an amazing array of individuals, including:
-- Chino Hardin, a drug dealer for years in Brooklyn, who started his business when he was 14 years old.
-- Leigh Maddox, a state trooper who later turned away from the drug war.
-- Rosalio Reta, a killer for the Zetas in Mexico, who resides in a prison in Texas.
-- Marisela Escobedo, who refused to accept her daughter’s murder by drug traffickers, and led protests in Mexico, until she was assassinated in front of the government palace (interviews were with family and friends).
-- Gabor Maté and Bruce Alexander, who developed new ways of looking at addiction, while working with addicts in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
-- Bud Osborn, a poet and homeless addict who helped transform that area of Vancouver and bring about the notion of rights for addicts.
-- Ruth Dreifuss, former President of Switzerland, who supported and promoted harm reduction approaches, including heroin clinics.
-- João Goulão, who helped lead a revolution in drug policy in Portugal.
-- José Mujica, president of Uruguay, who brought marijuana legalization to his country.
… and we learn about the players in the very different legalization approaches in Washington and Colorado.

Good stories, compelling arguments, and powerful facts (all fact-checked by the author and editors, with over 65 pages of notes, and a website with actual audio tapes of the interviews for those who want more).

I think this is the most important book about the drug war and addiction out today.

a punch in the gut...
By Anita
I read this in less than 12hrs, marking and making notes on every page. He manages to weave personal stories in and then zoom out to the larger issues at stake.
It's well-cited & has plenty of links, so any ideas of plagiarism or factiousness should be researched before throwing accusations. (Plenty of links, citations, etc.)
He's honest about his conflictions and changes in people's stories. I have buried more friends between 20-40 due to heroin/pills (& a few drunk driving,) than most can imagine. I know all too well that even people who "know better" can still become addicted. There is so much isolation in being an addict, causing further withdrawl from society & unwillingness to tell friends/family for fear of being judged. When you're an addict, one often feels as if there's nobody else who understands...except your sick addict running buddies. I was a professional, it took me almost a year to kick, and after a while I told everyone who didn't know. I was ostracized, except by 2 people who I NEVER expected to have any compassion for me (those were the friends I *thought* I'd lose. They gave me comfort & love.) Punative measures aren't helpful for addiction, mental illness, etc.
My fair city is cited a few times in this book as Anslinger was severely delusional in his pursuit to punish all addicts, and I see the faces of desperate addicts every day. I know how corrupt my PD is.
While he lays out info in a somewhat informal way (cited!,) it paints a human picture. It's a GREAT read in tandem with "The New Jim Crow." (Alexander.)

Flawed Book Makes Important Case
By Paul Stafford
I don't really care if Johann Hari has been caught plagiarizing in the past, or that some of his points are overstated or specious. I don't really care that his writing is somewhat puerile and often rambles. This book forcefully makes a point that needs making: the war on drugs is an endless, expensive, counter-productive failure that injures so many, and only benefits violent criminals and careerist law enforcement officials. It is possibly the worst policy disaster in US history, and needs to be replaced with a policy of regulation, taxation and compassion, for everyone's good.

No matter that the examples of Portugal, Switzerland and Vancouver are imperfect models for the US, and may not work well on the scale required in a society as fractured as the US. No matter that there is no obvious or easy solution to the deeper issues of disconnectedness and isolation that Hari identifies, perhaps accurately, perhaps not, as prerequisites of addiction.

Start with the principle that you will make drugs available to those that want or need them, in whatever form suits them, regulate dosages and purity, tax the transaction, and invest those receipts in compassionate treatment and oversight for the minority that becomes addicted, and you have already accomplished so much. You have taken money and power away from violent drug gangs. You have removed the incentive for addicts to steal. You have reduced illness and death from overdose, impure drugs, and blood-borne illness such as HIV and hepatitis. And...

You have replaced pursuing, capturing, judging and punishing people with a sickness they cannot control with compassion and inclusion. Instead of stigmatizing them as unemployable outcasts with few good options in life, you are telling them that their lives matter, that they are sick but not pariahs, that help is available to them if and when they want it. If the benefits of this were only symbolic, they would be tremendous if only in what they said about our society and how it treats its saddest and most vulnerable. It would make everyone feel better and warmer towards each other. I know that sounds like hippie b.s., but think about it.

It does appear that there are real benefits to trying the taxation/treatment route. Who knows what the best model is, or how well any of them would apply on the grand dystopian panorama that is US society. But we do know one thing: the current paradigm is hopelessly broken in about every way you can imagine. It is the poster child of bad policy, with every kind of counterproductive outcome and none of the hoped-for benefits. We have to try a different way.

Of course, this is a book review, and all I've done is say that I agree with the author's main point. It is an imperfect book, and I'd like to read more on a subject I've contemplated for decades. But hell, if mediocre writing and an author with a checkered past are what's required to popularize such an important set of points to the world, I am willing to overlook the flaws and focus on carrying on the discussion. In the sense of the ideas it is selling, and much of the evidence presented on their behalf, this is a great, great book.

NO UNSPOKEN PROMISES

Blake Warner is a man who has sworn he will never marry. Therefore, he doesn’t understand how he ended up standing in front of a preacher with the little hellion he met the night before. It was true that he had taken her to bed, but he thought she was already married. Blake may have been one of Chicago’s most notorious rakes, but he would never intentionally break the cardinal rule of rogues—never take a young woman’s innocence. He made sure she understood before he took her to bed that he was offering no unspoken promises.

Meredith Vande Linde knew she would die a spinster in her small Minnesota town after a scandal tarnished her reputation. So what harm could there be in letting Blake think she was married, and allowing the handsome stranger to take her innocence. He would leave the next day, and no one would know.

It never occurred to either of them they might get caught, until it happened.

This is a full-length novel. Re-edited May 2015

The rake meets his match
By AK Mystery Mom
No Unspoken Promises is a steamy and yet ultimately sweet story. Blake is a wealthy but damaged man, flitting from woman to woman and appalled to find himself stuck with young and innocent Meredith. Meredith may be innocent, but she’s a self-proclaimed hellion and gives as good as she gets. They find the friction almost as exhilarating as their mutual attraction, but there are plenty of complications.

I liked this book. The characters were well drawn and the plot had more depth than many romances. I have to think that Meredith would blush that we know so many steamy details of their most intimate moments, but their attraction is central to the story. Since I’m not a history buff, I can’t comment on the historical accuracy, but I found the setting interesting. I recommend this story for anyone who enjoys romance with sparks as opposites attract and heal one another.

100% Satisfied!
By Merry Well
I expected passion. I got it! I expected adventure. Got that too! I expected characters that were well defined and drew me in. In fact, they seemed so real I thought they were reading their lines over my shoulder. Yes, I love history and romance but I am a picky reader and Nelms does not fail to please. The research is excellent, the plot intriguing, and the struggles never stop. Can't wait for a sequel!

Good Read, but Lots of Errors
By Laura Tatom
I really enjoyed this book, the characters were interesting especially Meredith. The author wrote an entertaining novel, but there were many proofreading errors or typos. Not enough to prevent me from finishing, but it was annoying. The story was full of twists and events that made it hard to put down. Definitely worth reading if you want a light story.

Proving Darwin: Making Biology Mathematical, by Gregory Chaitin

Groundbreaking mathematician Gregory Chaitin gives us the first book to posit that we can prove how Darwin’s theory of evolution works on a mathematical level.

For years it has been received wisdom among most scientists that, just as Darwin claimed, all of the Earth’s life-forms evolved by blind chance. But does Darwin’s theory function on a purely mathematical level? Has there been enough time for evolution to produce the remarkable biological diversity we see around us? It’s a question no one has yet answered—in fact, no one has even attempted to answer it until now.

In this illuminating and provocative book, Gregory Chaitin argues that we can’t be sure evolution makes sense without a mathematical theory. He elucidates the mathematical scheme he’s developed that can explain life itself, and examines the works of mathematical pioneers John von Neumann and Alan Turing through the lens of biology. Chaitin presents an accessible introduction to metabiology, a new way of thinking about biological science that highlights the mathematical structures underpinning the biological world. Fascinating and thought-provoking, Proving Darwin makes clear how biology may have found its greatest ally in mathematics.

About the Author

Gregory Chaitin is widely known for his work on metamathematics and for his discovery of the celebrated Omega number, which proved the fundamental unknowability of math. He is the author of many books on mathematics, including Meta Math! The Quest for Omega. This is his first book on biology. Chaitin was for many years at the IBM Watson Research Center in New York. The research described in this book was carried out at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, where Chaitin is now a professor. An Argentine-American, he is an honorary professor at the University of Buenos Aires and has an honorary doctorate from the National University of Cordoba, the oldest university in Argentina.

One
Introduction: Overview of Proving Darwin

Like many pure mathematicians, I like giving “chalk” talks: improvised talks given on a blackboard or white- board using a minimum of technological assistance. Another strategy is for me to fill the board with what I want to cover just before I start to lecture, while people are still coming in, so that they can take in all the key ideas at a glance. In a large auditorium, however, a projector is necessary, or nobody will see anything.

On the facing page you can see me giving an overview of this book in a large auditorium at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. The four slides I prepared are on pages 5 and 6. They summarize Chapters 2 to 4, which outline my strategy for making biology mathematical. After you finish reading these chapters, you should review the slides. Then they will make more sense.

You’ve heard people refer to DNA as a computer program? Well, that’s the whole idea: to make this metaphor into a mathematical theory of evolution. In fact, it turns out that the mathematical tools for doing this were already available in the 1970s. More precisely, we will treat evolution as a random walk in software space. Random walks are an idea that mathematicians feel comfortable with, although the space we are walking around in at random is bigger than usual.

I call this proposed new field “metabiology” because it is a highly simplified version of real biology—otherwise I wouldn’t be able to prove any theorems. These theorems are presented in Chapter 5, which is the climax of the book, and was a talk that I gave at the Santa Fe Institute. Chapters 6 to 8 discuss the broader significance of metabiology, theological, political and epistemological. And then there are two appendices.

In the first appendix you can read the crucial section on self-reproducing automata in John von Neumann’s far-seeing “DNA = Software” paper that influenced Sydney Brenner, who in turn influenced Francis Crick—a remarkable fact that I only discovered while working on this book. And the second appendix gives some additional mathematical details that may be of interest to experts.

Finally, I give a short list of suggested further reading, some books and a few articles that are important if you want to really understand metabiology. These are the books and articles that helped me the most to come up with a strategy for making biology mathematical, plus a few more related items that I threw in just for the fun of it. Enjoy them all!

Interesting ideas but short on actual content/results
By J. Andrew Howe
This book promised so much, and yet delivered so little. To be sure, the author has some very interesting ideas that are worth being exposed to but that does not save this book. The first problem is in delivery - almost the entire book seems to be taken verbatim from class lectures. Certain content is duplicated often enough, that the book could have been cut in half with no loss. The second issue lies in the content itself. The author claims to have developed a working toy model of Darwinian evolution. But there's one fundamental problem here - his model relies on algorithmic mutation to introduce diversity, whereas real organisms generally undergo bitwise mutation. Hence, his model allows for a much more sophisticated search of the genotype space than is allowed in nature. In the same vein, by his own admission, the model can not actually be simulated, because it relies on a fitness function that can not be guaranteed to produce a result.

Not as important, but still misleading, is that his result claims to model Darwinian evolution. This is not true, as Darwinism posits that all existing life forms came into being from nothing (or from a primordial soup, if you wish) solely through natural selection acting on genetic crossover & mutation. What his model actually demonstrates (or would, if it could be simulated) is non-Darwinian adaptation & evolution. His evolution is only capable of tiny incremental changes that can not possibly create entirely new structures - they can only rearrange existing structures.

In summary, the fundamental ideas relating biology-mathematics-creativity are very interesting, as is the goal of developing a mathematical model for evolution. However, all this is worth a 30-60 minute lecture; not this book.

Thought-provoking.....
By Michael Jandrok
Mathematician Gregory Chaitin attempts to provide a mathematical model of evolution in this short book based on a university course given in the Spring of 2011 at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where the author is a professor. It also adapts material given at one of his lectures at the Santa Fe Institute. It is a quick read and an outline at best of his work, but it does give the reader a general idea of the concepts behind what the author calls "metabiology", an attempt to model evolutionary adaptation through computer software rather than natural software, otherwise known as DNA.

The central premise of this book is that by utilizing algorithmic information theory and the flexible and creative nature of postmodern mathematics, one can construct a working mathematical toy model of evolution, creating a piece of randomly mutating software that selects for a fitness trait. The main idea here is that DNA is a naturally occurring piece of software, our internal programming language as it were. This is not an original concept, but it is one that Chaitin expands upon greatly in the text.

I'll admit that it's an absolutely compelling idea. Evolution, after all, is the backbone of modern biology, but its main concepts are often misunderstood or outright rejected by a significant portion of the population. If one can really take a mathematical model and "prove" that the basic mechanisms of evolution (random mutations and natural selection) work as advertised, then it could go a long way towards advancing scientific literacy.

Keep in mind that the author's model is simplistic at best, selecting for only one trait and having none of the environmental pressures that truly drive adaptation. That said, it DOES work, and it provides a foundation for more complex models that will more thoroughly mimic life processes in the future, especially as biotechnology advances into computer science.

There ARE mathematical formulas presented in the text, but they don't overshadow the main ideas. You'll probably understand most of the general ideas if you have a basic proficiency in high school level algebra and/or logic. The appendices go into additional technical detail, but they can be skipped unless you have the educational foundation to fully understand the concepts presented.

I'd recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the subject matter, though I would like to see an expanded and more accessible revision of this work at some point in the future.

The Motivation to Look Deeper
By T. H. Ray
I feel compelled to weigh in here, if only to help balance the negative reviews. It's true that one who is not familiar with Gregory Chaitin's broader research program will probably not fully comprehend important points of his lecture series on which *Proving Darwin* is based. As one who has listened to Dr. Chaitin hold forth to an enchanted audience for a 20 minute stretch without benefit of notes or visual aids, however, I expect that if you give him a chance to influence your thinking on how life and mathematics intersect and evolve together -- you'll be enchanted, too. More, you might be motivated to look into the rich tapestry of results that Chaitin has woven from his Algorithmic Information Theory and Omega Number.

It's well worth the effort.

Amazon.com Review
Susan Hertog managed to obtain 10 separate interviews with her very private subject (though not access to Anne Morrow Lindbergh's unpublished papers), and her personal involvement shows in every line of this impassioned biography. Hertog's searching account of the Lindbergh marriage explores the complex union of two people who loved each other deeply yet were emotionally ill-suited. Charles "saw the rebel heart inside the timid girl" and liberated a confined daughter of privilege into a world of adventure, but "[the] price she paid for her Prince" was high, including painful loneliness during his frequent absences and, most agonizingly, the 1932 death of their baby son. Though he was killed by kidnappers, in the Lindberghs' view he was equally a victim of the relentless publicity surrounding them. As the couple withdrew to protect their other children, Anne experienced a sense of isolation, but she was also liberated to explore her inner life and to delineate it in her writing--which was always supported by Charles. Hertog, who read Gift from the Sea (1955) as a new mother without knowing anything about its author, enthusiastically assesses that bestseller and other books in which Anne asserted that "a woman must come of age by herself," reminding readers that Anne Morrow Lindbergh is not the wife of a famous aviator, but a source of inspiration in her own right. --Wendy Smith

From Publishers Weekly
"My life began when I met Charles Lindbergh," wrote Anne Morrow Lindbergh. As a reserved Smith College junior who harbored the ambition to become a writer, she met her future husband in 1927, soon after he became the first pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic. Raised in a privileged yet conventional environment as the daughter of Dwight Morrow, the American ambassador to Mexico, Anne embarked on a life of adventure with Lindbergh, although she soon recognized the difficulty of reconciling her literary ambitions with accompanying her husband as copilot, navigator and radio operator. After the tragic kidnapping and death of their first child, which they blamed in part on dogged press coverage of their personal life, the Lindberghs moved abroad. They became embroiled with the leaders of Nazi Germany, according to Hertog, because Charles believed that the democratic system was weak and ineffectual, as evidenced by the unbridled freedom of the press. Hertog contends that, although she was not as convinced as her husband of the integrity of the Nazi cause, Anne publicly supported him out of wifely loyalty. On their return to the U.S. and with her husband's encouragement, Anne launched a successful literary career, publishing memoirs, poetry and chronicles of her aerial adventures. Although not as exhaustive as Scott Berg's Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Charles, this sympathetic portrayal of Anne as a wife, mother, poet and feminist may well find a readership more interested in a talented woman's creative struggle than in the oft-told Lindbergh story. From Library Journal
The publisher's claim that this is the "first full-length biography" of Lindbergh must surely surprise Dorothy Herrmann, whose Anne Morrow Lindbergh: A Gift for Life (1992; Penguin, 1993. reprint) is still in print. After a sustained campaign, journalist Hertog did gain personal interviews with Lindbergh, but by allowing Lindbergh to speak for herself, she leaves almost every paragraph so studded with quotation marks as to be obtrusive, even irritating. Hertog's handling of the kidnapping and the Lindberghs' dalliance with Nazi Germany is objective, clear, and logical, but her conclusions about Anne Morrow Lindbergh's independence and integrity are less convincing; throughout, the lead role in her life's drama is taken by Charles. Still, the subject and her times are interesting, and given the scarcity of Lindbergh biographies and the subject's advancing age, this will be a justifiable addition to larger collections.

A crashing disappointment
By Toni C. Williams
Having read Anne Morrow Lindbergh's diaries, her daughter Reeve's first memoir, Berg's biography of Charles, and Gift from the Sea, I was truly looking forward to this biography. Knowing that the author had interviewed Mrs. Lindbergh, I was expecting new insights into someone who, I believe, was one of the 20th century's most remarkable women. What I found instead was a rehash of all the material I had previously read linked together with lame "psychological insights" and platitudes.
Another thing that bothered me was her considerable reliance on the published diaries without taking into account that they were edited for publication, and by Charles at that, who saw them as a way to refurbish his public image, using his wife's popularity following the publication of Gift from the Sea.
In short, there is no depth to this book at all.

A Fascinating autionary Biography Of Anne Morrow Lindbergh!
By Barron Laycock
This book is a wonderful reminder of just how remarkable a woman the long-suffering Anne Morrow Lindbergh was in her own right, and of the difficult time she had emerging from the extremely dark shadows of husband Charles Lindbergh life of accomplishment, aggravation, and pathetic self-absorption. In this literate and quite readable biography by Susan Hertog, a portrait of this singular woman comes soaring to the heights despite of life of incredible personal hardship and sorrow. It is also a sad reminder that into each life rain must fall, regardless of how affluent, famous, or privileged.
It is a common place by this point in our history that Anne Morrow Lindbergh was a victim of colossal proportions, not only in terms of the controversial and shocking kidnapping and death of her infant son in the early 1930s, but also by her domination for decades by "Lucky Lindy", and she was trapped by convention and circumstance into an incredibly difficult life with this brilliant but strangely detached human being she was married to. From the moment they met her life was destined to trail in the shadow of his, both by virtue of tradition and her own desire to have a predominantly private life. Yet, curiously, she ironically married the man most singularly unable to give her all that she wanted and needed. Their life together is a somber and complicated modern American tragedy on the scale of "Death of a Salesman".
Yet Anne Morrow Lindbergh rose above her situation and their personal life of tragedy and disappointment. Lindbergh was a peripatetic traveler, and while she often accompanied him (indeed, he insisted in order to keep her primary focus exclusively on him rather than on their children or anything else), in their later years they came to live increasingly more separate and distinct lives, even while together. To say Lindbergh was a bizarre man and a strange soul is to be kind to a man described in pitiless terms by his widow herself and his adult child. It is easy for younger readers ignorant of how difficult and scandalous divorce or separation would have been for her, it may seem difficult to understand why she stayed with him despite his cruelty, indifference, and prejudices all those years. But for older readers more familiar with the older and more common character virtues people of Mrs. Lindbergh's generation, social background, and time subscribed to, it is a tragic set of circumstances that only she can understand in all its tragic overtones.
This is a close up portrait of a woman tragically trapped by fame, marriage, and social convention into a life of limitless advantages but cruelly wasted opportunities. That she was as successful as an author, humanitarian, social activist and early feminist later in her life is a tribute to a remarkable woman, and yet a bittersweet reminder of how much more she might have been had she never met her future husband. This is a interesting, well written, and captivating study of a woman and her times, and is one I recommend to people interested in a most fascinating yet offbeat biography. Enjoy!

Her Extraordinary Life
By Monica B.
I just finished this book. Anne Morrow Lindbergh was an amazing and inspiring lady and this book gives the reader a detailed account of her life. My tastes in reading material usually are geared more towards contemporary fiction but I picked up this book on a recomendation from a friend. And if you are like me, you probably have a stack of books on your bedside table that you are systematically reading. Well, Anne Morrow Lindbergh: Her Life, came to the top of that pile and dutifully I started reading. I was so pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this book (seeing as how the 'biography' has not been my first choice in reading material). The content (AML's life) is just so interesting that it is better then most of the fiction I have read as of late. Anne Morrow Lindbergh is just such a remarkable lady and the author has gone to great length to "know" her subject. You will find the depth of the research Ms. Hertog did on AML to be nothing short of phenomanal. The chapters on the Lindbergh Baby kidknapping literally took my breath away and kept me up until three o'clock in the morning. The writing was that fresh and intense, I felt as if I was experiencing it all first hand.
